People should stop personal attacks on MrPee. Attack his arguments by all means, but personal attacks from behind the keyboard is, among other things, cowardly.

Sadly on most occasions there is no argument to attack.

How else do you suggest I address him other than from 'behind the keyboard'?

Thank you, Beefy, it does all get a bit tedious doesn't it? But (mainly) amateurs relentless name-calling and feeble attempts at "humorous" jibes don't really bother me. A bit like wasps at a picnic, you just have to put up with it. Mr GG I have long since put on ignore, although I did have a slight relapse when he started this thread and made the mistake of reading a couple of his posts. I've learnt my lesson there.

Meanwhile, back in the real world:-

Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

The phrase 'in the line of duty' seems to be the key here. What Marine A did was not in the line of duty - it was clearly calculated with the victim prone and defenceless. It was not an act of self-defence or performed in defence of others. The murder achieved nothing apart from the Marine's appearance before a Court Martial.

An interesting viewpoint from a legal professional and one that, insofar as it goes, is not of necessity invalid in all cases, but killing in the line of duty (which is one of the requirements that armed forces personnel on active duty in a war situation are contracted and paid to fulfil) is one thing but the cold blooded murder of one person committed wilfully by Marine A in contravention of the terms of the Geneva Convention is quite another, not least because his action did, by his own admission, breach the terms of that convention; if all killing in war were in breach of the Geneva Convention and that Convention were to hold sway over all other legal arguments, we would have no legalised killings in any wars covered by that Convention (now there seems to be a good idea tucked away in there somewhere!).

I ask again, Mr Pee - and I am not trading insults here, as I hope you can recognise - what exactly does "supporting one's country" (as distinct from its government) mean and how is it to be done and seen to be done?

I "attack" no one, including Mr Pee - and asking him the question that I did is not any kind of "attack" on him personally.

Good link. The more I reflect, the more I think that the issue of extenuating circumstances is paramount in all of this.

To what 'relentless name-calling' do you refer? I concede that I've used 'PeeMeister' which is a reversal of your screen name in cod German, that's all.

Just because I give support the the heroic MrPee does not mean we're an item.

And, I'm not ignoring anyone, what are you on about?

And I'm on the wagon and actually drinking Diet Dr Pepper as I type.

And, when I drink wine, it's Sancerre.

And I'm listening to Einstürzende Neubauten, because some cool dude told me that Combichrist is middle of the road and I've got my rep to think of.

It perhaps should be restated that he was found guilty of murder by a court martial made up of military officers, not a civilian court. I don't believe any military officer connected with the trial has sought to offer excuses for what was done by Marine A.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
