I wonder if scotty would agree to imposing a penalty on any male employee who made pregnant a female member of staff in the same organisation? In so doing the company could reduce, or even abolish the forfeit paid by the pregnant female for her apparent fecklessness (ahem!).

So the answer is to make paternity leave equal to maternity leave AND to make it compulsory.

Thus equality will be achieved? I knew it had to be easy.

The net effect then will be a net drop in the reproduction rate, because we know that chaps hate hanging around with babies, which is good for the planet, and we can let more people in from the EU with a clear conscience to replace the UK babies who won't be born because of this new-found equality.

So men are clearly discriminated against if they can't find full-time employment and then go looking for part-time work ... ?

I don't think I'd go for the argument that women should be paid less because they might take maternal leave. But let's examine an artificial but quite common employment occurrence. Suppose you're working in a small, profitable company offering a service that must be available 40/52 to it's clients in order to secure its profitability. You are the section head of a department directly involved in that service delivery. The section comprises 5 people, including yourself. But one person from your section has left the company so you need to recruit. You recruit largely on the basis of qualifications and experience, realising that probably a years training will be required in order to deliver the company's particular expertise. You target the graduate/first job market and it comes down to two people with similar age (say 25-30), experience and grades, a women and a man. Which do you chose? Let's also say that you're quite willing to (and normally do) discuss appointments with your existing staff which already includes both sexes. Who do they chose?
