    They can track you down!

This article about how the FBI has tracked down a suspect through his online activity is interesting - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24371894

And however sinister that may seem, they tracked him down through the email address that he divulged. A bit like the bank robber who pushed a note to the teller demanding money, written on a piece of paper with his name and address on the back.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think it was a bit more complicated than that. I noted the thing about them being able to see draft or earlier versions of postings, where he'd make mistakes the first time. So one message for posters round here is "get it right first time" - which may be hard to do. No use of the Edit button!

Indeed it was - and there are sinister aspects. I was really referring to the simple slip-up which 'gave investigators a major boost in their search', as the story says. But allowing this kind of access should be a 'fair exchange' - that those who have the access (as in any Data Protection agreement) can be trusted and that those who in some way divulge that data understand what they are doing. Does that cover the risks or not?

You may think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

It's ok to poke fun, but where would we be without consumer electronics?
