    Postal strike...

This could be a disaster for those of us who buy a lot from the internet. According to the news, it may last two days in Scotland. I have visions of the long awaited Isserlis/Dvorak 'cello concerto being delayed in reaching the PG cd drawer as it sits at the bottom of a colossal pile of post.

Mind you, I still think the striking post office folk have a point.

The Tory proposals would be an even bigger disaster - and not just for internet purchases.

I'm seeing it on a daily basis in the NHS. There's a real feeling amongst my colleagues that staff are just being run into the ground.

Erm...could I very politely ask whether this thread shouldn't be on the Politics board? Only the most tenuous connection to CD Review. You might as well talk about the firemen's strike on the grounds someone might set fire to your CD collection?

I agree with Richard, we should be backing our local postie not fretting if a cd gets held up for a few days.

Good point. Perhaps the moderators could oblige.

Perhaps it's a cunning plan to alert people to the fact that a thread on the postal strike has been started, before it's shunted off to the sidings.

But yes, I agree with Richard.

People could always download an item and then that would scupper the postal strike.

Surely it would be better to scupper the privatisation?

I liked Steve Bell's 'If' strips in the Guardian on the subject.

Just to clarify matters it's the Post Office (Shop) workers who've been on strike recently. The Post Office is not being privatised, though branches are being closed and more are being contracted out. The Royal Mail workers have not gone on strike yet. .

They are already 'modernising' our local postal deliveries. Which I take to mean that we can now expect our daily delivery at any random point in the morning or well in to the afternoon.

Been the situation for some time now. If future owners can get to alternate day deliveries it will be very profitable for them but it would need to go through Parliament.

Successive governments have taken the postal service apart bit by bit. The profitable telephone side of the GPO was the first to be taken from them, followed by a whole list of services that Post Offices offered. Competition crept in, first with parcels, then with alternative mail cherry pickers.
Michael Heseltine actually argued very strongly for keeping the Royal Mail as a monopoly, being more efficient and sustainable. It's a pity no-one listened.
