I am grateful, on this one occasion, that Floss quoted Mr.GG's post. His referral to me as "Mr. Piss" has reminded me of just one of the reasons I have chosen to ignore him:- because he is offensive and rude.

Bloom's problem is that he's so old he doesn't realise that, in the natural course of the development of the language, the meaning of slut he's familiar with:

1. a. A woman of dirty, slovenly, or untidy habits or appearance.

has been almost entirely overtake by this one:

2. a. A woman of a low or loose character.

The same is probably true of scotty, who would not, I am sure, normally call into question the sexual morals of a roomful of women, nor would defend anyone who did.

It seems pretty clear from listening to the actual exchange that the 'roomful of women' appeared to enjoy Mr Bloom's somewhat teenage-style banter. It appeared to me at least (and obviously to the audience) that rather than 'insulting' women he was poking fun at what might be now automatically termed 'misogyny'.

Darren McCaffrey of Sky News acknowledged that the audience laughed at 'the joke' but said he and other media mischief-makers decided 'to challenge' Mr Bloom about it when he left the meeting. The rest we could see and then judge for ourselves. Not content with lecturing the man about political correctness over gender one of the mischief-makers decided to bring race into the equation as well.

I thought Bloom handled the situation rather well (indeed quite cleverly and entertainingly) until he completely succumbed to the goading and provocation and fell headlong into the trap quite deliberately placed before him. The media then had a great headline for TV and the weekend newspapers.

I think Bloom's politics are nonsense. He also seems to enjoy living up to his reputation as one who might typically prop up the local rugby club bar. In fact he keeps referring to his rugby club for some reason. We don't seem to have much in common apart from age and a gross dislike of others telling us what we should or should not think and say.

And surely one of the most 'insulting' things to women is to outrageously suggest that a roomful of them are not capable of making up their own minds on such matters and need some sort of protection from a single, probably very nervous old man invited to address them!

That's quite a good point - and it's an indication of how far UKIP is from being any kind of serious political party that he's the only thing they've got to offer a roomful of persons of either sex.

We are probably in agreement about that.

BUT would you vote for someone who clearly has no understanding of what a well used word means ?
The folks who reach for a dictionary to show how there is an archaic meaning and then insist (I can think of another three letter word that starts with a G ....) that THIS is what they really meant , just reinforce their own sense of ridiculousness.
