What - in saying that he's not trying to be provocative, or in the post as a whole?

Just as an aside, there were two comments after the vote which made me smile:

Canon Patrick Thomas of Christ Church, Carmarthen, who supported the change, said: “I'm happy with Bishop Wyn but would be just as happy with Bishop Wynona."

Nigel King, stewardship officer for the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon, added: “Do we really care whether the Bishop has external or internal plumbing?” :-)

Oh yes he was. He would have been trying to be provocative otherwise.

I asked a question of amateur; I got a reply. End of discussion as far as I am concerned

Reminds me of Archbishop Ramsey's apparent reply to a woman asking what he thought the difference to be between men and women regarding joining the clergy: "My d-d-d-dear l-l-lady, I c-c-can't conceive!"

I do wonder what the point of your original post was if you weren't being provocative. & you didn't explain why you thought the use of the word might discourage people from engaging in discussion; or, indeed, why you didn't engage with the subject, but only with the way in which it had been introduced.

Impossible to say, unless people pop up & say so. It would seem to have dissuaded him from engaging.

Anyway, it is splendid news; with first the Scottish Episcopalian church & now the Church of Wales electing to have female bishops the Church of England is increasingly looking - well, I won't say 'behind the times', because that suggests that electing female bishops is simply 'fashionable', whereas it's simply a recognition that women as well as men can both minister to people's souls as well as manage an organisation.

You see Padraig you have just got involved or in a way instigated one of THOSE arguments....easily enough done....one word out of place BINGO, off on a merrygo round of minor vitriol....I too see nothing wrong with AM51 post....if someone disagreed all they have to say is I don't think it is splendid news....you got a bit of support from Beefoven, but looking at a couple of his posts ref Am51 lately, he is on the hunt for an Am51 passive aggressive post....it's only cyber space....and we all know you are an exemplary poster....I think Am51 must be a bit fed up with people doubting Am51 intentions....

Let's not forget that Amateur also originally posted this thread in the main forum, when it is clearly, as FF said, related to current affairs. Again, as with the "splendid" remark, I think he was being deliberately provocative in so doing, as he was when he started the thread abour post traumatic stress in the military, where in his opening post he was clearly trying to steer things in the direction of one of his favourite hobby-horses.

Well to be honest, the Church of England/Wales/Outer Mongolia is a bit of an irrelevance to most people these days, so as far as that goes it can do what it likes. My local Bishop might as well be a transexual transvestite from Transylvania for all the difference it will make to my daily life. So from that point of view I don't really see how this news is even worth a comment, apart from the fact that it is another example, rather like Gay Marriage, of institutions abanding long held tenets and beliefs simply to appear more in tune with the zeitgeist. I am sure the Church will try any gimmick it can think of as it attempts to shore up its dwindling congregation. I dare say it is indeed splendid news for the few women who aspire to become a Bishop, of which there a probably...four or five, but as for the rest of humanity and womankind...meh.

The Church does remind me a bit of the Lib Dems - everybody knows it's there but hardly anybody cares.
