We have just had a long thread on the subject of gay rights in Russia; Amateur for one manages to reference his sexuality whenever he can; it is a subject that polarises opinion, and now JLW has launched yet another thread on the subject, when she could easily have simply continued the existing one.

I am getting fed up with the way that a small minority seek to push this subject onto the messageboards at every opportunity; although I suppose one could equally say the same about the gay lobby in wider society.

MrPee, you too refer to your sexuality whenever you can - -check out that mote in your own eye, eh?

I was thinking of starting a thread with the heading "how does your sexuality affect the way you listen to Radio 3 and/or music in general ?" but since my own answer to the question would probably have to be "as far as I'm aware it doesn't", I thought better of it.

Maybe we should have a 'social justice campaigns' forum , where all campaigns can be aired; a sort of The Week's Good Cause. I received a letter from WaterAid this morning saying that (dream on) if every household in the UK donated just £2 a month they could start to revolutionise the lives of 783 million people who lack safe water and 2.5bn who have no access to sanitation.

You seem to be unaware that my opening post was PRECISELY ABOUT the Russian government interfering with freedom of artistic expression in a film about Tchaikovsky. I can't blame you since the moderators chose to begin this transferred thread with a tired old lament from Mr. Pee, of all the generous-spirited metrosexual liberals, rather than my original comment about that film (which would have made sense of this very discussion!). Is that post, critiquing the Russian government's view of a great Russian composer, now seen as too "inflammatory" to repeat? If so, congrats comrade! The homophobes on this forum will be smiling. If I lived in Russia now, I might be in some remote region sharing a coffee with a member of Pussy Riot. If I was lucky.

I've always (oh so fondly) imagined that anyone with an intelligent interest in classical music or "art music" of any century would also be interested in the wider culture in which it exists, relates to, critiques and takes its meanings from. To list a discussion of persecution of any group of individuals under "Diversions" is breathtaking; it's one of the better cliches to say that for evil to triumph it is only necessary for good men and women to do nothing. So don't take your freedoms for granted now, especially in the anglo-american GB of 2013.

Finally, Catholics have nothing to be so 'proud' about that they take to the streets to express that pride. On the contrary, they are much more likely to shake their heads in despair and feel a deep sense of shame, and as french frank so memorably put it 'hide for cover' (or words to that effect!) :smile:

I think that the citizens of Belfast would find this hard to take scotty and remind me, how much did the citizens of UK have to spend on security for the CEO of Catholicism when he (Ratzinger as was) paid a lengthy visit to these shores?

I know some very silly badges do exist which are very likely simply a knee-jerk reaction to things like Gay Pride, though I've never actually seen any on the streets.

Russia is not in the EU and as far as I know there are no immediate plans for it to join.

I'm sure the Russian authorities will look closely at your advice for them 'to exercise their minds' on how the run their own internal affairs.

If the huge majority of Russian people find the promotion of homosexuality unacceptable that is their 'human right' as well!
