There is no capacity market, the generators are not paid for bringing firm capacity into the generation mix. And yes, we're so heavily subsidised, here and there, that no one's bringing new capacity in to the market unless they can strike a subsidy deal.

Which means that we pay twice for our energy - once in the form of our bills and again in the form of a subsidy to the generators to build new power stations and throw in a guaranteed price floor as well so ensuring that our bills remain high in the future as well.

Nothing like a bit of repetition: things read and things posted - kettles and fascism - on the blog of 'one of the UK's best-known critics of the so-called global warming consensus'. The comments over there are similarly derisive, I see!

As for 're-engineering the European energy market': I quite agree. In the run-up to the next election Nick Clegg should make a public pledge to do that.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

That was my point. I think the suggestion that any small political grouping can achieve much by way of making promises is unrealistic, which should teach them not to do it.

Well, we're not quite there yet, but our politicians are working at it very hard. The there's the upgrade to the transmission system (there's nowt the matter with the existing grid) in order to allow us to connect the new windfarm on Rockall . . .
