According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Don't just blame the tabloids for misinformation. The Coalition does a pretty fine job of it too.

Makes me very cross, so much of it is down to the press/media-political party spin axis plus lack of statistical education as the article says. Unsurprisingly it comes down to class access to education, I suppose - see this posted previously on Calum's 'elephant in the room' thread:

And your point is? It's very nice here on Gallifrey, the suns are shining brightly, thank you very much...

PS: This all puts me in mind of that brilliant bit of Douglas Adams:

Nothing travels faster than the speed of light with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own special laws. The Hingefreel people of Arkintoofle Minor did try to build spaceships that were powered by bad news but they didn't work particularly well and were so extremely unwelcome whenever they arrived anywhere that there wasn't really any point in being there.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I like the theory that nobody knows anything, which seems to accord with the cock-up theory under which human beings generally achieve the opposite of what they set out to achieve.
