I'm not stereotyping. I'm just referring to a general trend, which is more prominent in some places than others.

Indeed. One of the things I noticed on the streets of New York was amount of obesity. I thought it very strange that, as far as appearance went, people were so sensitive about baldness/going grey but not about being very overweight.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

If you believe that this might be a typically NYC phenomenon, you should try visiting Hereford!...

People seem to think they have to pay to exercise - with a gym subscription. Last weekend, I did the Fairfield Horseshoe (8 Lakeland summits - a very popular walk) and it was clear that many people of all ages are still willing to do "free" exercise. Then I returned home to Filey and had to step into the road to avoid being flattened by Jabba the Hutt.

I was not saying it was typical of New York especially (though I'm not sure whether your comment refers to obesity, baldness, greying, or all three). It was the seeming paradox that in the country which has the highest obesity rates in the world (noticeably so, in my very limited experience) they spend so much time/money getting their teeth fixed, wearing wigs and toupees, dyeing their hair and undergoing various cosmetic operations, presumably to improve their appearance.

I remember Lionel Jefferies telling the story of how, when he was in a restaurant in the States, a man obviously wearing a hairpiece approached him very aggressively and asked whether he (LJ) was intending to make fun of him :erm:

"Well, I wasn't going to but I will if you want" is the sort of response one would only think of later.

I think one reason for such widespread obesity, and apparent indifference to it, is that you cant solve it by spending money. Money will buy you a hairpiece, dye your grey hairs or fix your teeth, but the only ways to reduce obesity, other than the very unpleasant-sounding option of a gastric band operation, are to eat less and/or exercise more. Neither seems very attractive to the average overweight American (or Brit, for that matter, you dont have to go all the way to NY to see fat people, there are plenty in my local supermarket).

                    No, I did realise that.

Obesity, principally - although I've also noticed how generally unwell so many people seem to look.

they really cannot wait to get healthcare on a PAYG basis.

Incidentally, NHS issues should be on Platform 3 IMO.

It is just so important, especially when you have idiots like summerton trying to take one of the more civilised things about the UK away from the many, for the financial benefit of the few.
