Obesity exists for a number of reasons, but environmental/lifestyle factors are among the biggest. I'm a northerner, so I can say it - go to King's Cross Station on a Saturday evening and take a look at the queue for the train to Leeds. Compare and contrast the waistlines of the average waiting passenger with those you have seen in the streets of London during the day.

Can I stereotype and make gross generalisations about interracial marriage etc because Mrs Oven isn't white?

Probably ineffective (as most of these things are) but there is a way at least of publicly registering our protest for those of us who live more by optimism than by experience:

So long as you acknowledge it's there in you in the first place to be brought out. :ok:

              And this today ....

The UK's leading biomedical research funders are joining forces to confront what many now regard as the epidemic of obesity. The Today programme's science correspondent Tom Feilden reports.

Thanks for the advice Bryn. Well, one can always find a medical study which supports a particular POV, can't one?

What exactly is a "genetic predisposition"? Presumably it occurs because individuals have been brought up in family environments where unhealthy, fatty foods are the norm. When I hear from obesity "sufferers" who wail about "slow metabolisms" I always say "Aren't you lucky not to need so much food? That must save you a lot of cash."

Advice to those with "a strong genetic predisposition" to obesity: adjust your eating habits accordingly in order that calorie intake matches calorie output. Measure your food intake until you get the balance right. It used to be called self control or self denial. Not a popular message these days it seems where everything is someone else's fault and not the individual's responsibility.

There's a strong disposition to over-complicate things. Humans have evolved to lay down fat and to give it up unwillingly. For all that we have had a mild(ish) climate for 10,000 years, we lived through much worse in the previous 125,000 years, and it is thought that the world population fell to about 10,000 as recently as 70,000 years ago, following volcanic eruptions in SE Asia (as it is now). It is no wonder that we have evolved to store calories and to have little inkling that we're 'overdoing it'.

Forget individual 'genetic predispositions' - we all have it.

So, back to the people who want to grab the NHS for private medical companies...
                              This is a simple issue.

any attempt to charge for or limit access to services should be opposed completely.
It is our service, we pay for it. privatisation is not necessary, we can afford universal care.

Follow the money if you want to find the "need" for change.

And overweight people had to pay tax last I heard.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

                                I blame smugglers.
