Simon doesn't like Bartok. That's all. No need for the detailed analysis.

    I don't like Britten.

But he did go in for further analysis A_I_C - he said it was 'tuneless, unpleasing and utterly unmusical rubbish':erm:

All of which are simply his personal opinions. Now moving on, children . . .

If you read back, Inspector, he presented it as fact. There were no "in my view", "imo..." etc.

Strange how one usually so forensic in his nit-picking should miss that, Taps :winkeye:

                Simon doesn't deal in opinions
those of us who have had the pleasure of his guidance for many years
will acknowledge that he has a unique ability to only speak truth
to be able to make logical judgements about music
without listening to it and to be the judge of all that is right and proper in the world ...........

he is, to be honest, a giant amongst intellectuals and we should be honoured that he
finds time in his busy international schedule to drop the odd pearl of wisdom into
                our impoverished laps .........

A statement regarding the value of art can only be an opinion. Many people express their opinions as if they were facts - it’s perfectly normal usage (I remember learning to tell the difference in primary school). Problems only arise when people go on to treat their opinions as if they were facts. For example: This type of music is great therefore it deserves subsidy.

I'm sorry that this has been a bit derailed - ts, it's your fault for mentioning Bartok!

But I was only offering a genuine reason why I wasn't fond of his music and trying to answer ts's question honestly It's true that I didn't preface everything by "in my opinion", but again, as has been pointed out, it should have been fairly clear to anyone with some average perception that what I was stating was simply that, an opinion.

If others find Bartok pleasant to listen to, good for them. And for him. I don't have any problem with that.

                          OXOXOXOXOXO

As regards the original thread topic, I'd be glad to read any rational comments about (for or against) what I wrote in my longer post. I'd be particularly keen a] to be shown how I may be mistaken, and b] to be told which bits Zhdanov wouldn't apparently, have written

Indeed, GG - though modesty wouldn't have permitted me to put it quite as directly as that.

Shame you don't heed the wisdom. But you will, one day!

                            General Note.

I feel it sensible to inform you all that I am being punished. I am in "pre-mod" - for the first time ever on any MB!

This is, I am told, because a couple of weeks ago I criticised both Israel and the Roman Catholic church on the same day and someone complained.

This means, of course, that I can't immediately reply to others, nor can I make quick corrections or clarifications to my posts.

I trust my co-posters will bear with me during these difficult times. :erm:

                            Many thanks
