I post merely for devilment.
I have little regard for statistics, as such, and in respect of those advanced in the education debate, I think this is with good reason. Forget those trotted out by the protagonists - just peek into the product reviews on Google or Argos, slog through the prose of eBay offerings, subject yourself to one of those banal television quiz shows, or (horror!) read some of the contributions to The Telegraph to quickly understand that the current (and perhaps immediately preceding) generation in unacceptably large measure is illiterate, inumerate and inarticulate. Not every one of these is included in the one-in-three trinity of those born to foreign parents as recorded in today's paper.
I think it is this lamentable condition which has exercised Mr Gove and I consider he deserves much credit for perhaps risking his parliamentary career and tackling a problem of long standing; one ducked by succeeding ministers having responsibility for this area. He may not be going about it in the best or a popular fashion - it would seem that he isn't! - but his aims should be encouraged, not thwarted by those reluctant to be disturbed from their comfort zones or having agendas involving political or social engineering.
More stick to come, I suspect but hey! (as the young people say), what's a little devilry amongst chums?Last edited by Guest; 14-06-13, 16:41.

I'm rather disappointedin the Labour Party's feeble stance with academies and free schools. They are now effectively condoning the policy.
In the past, Labour were consistent in bringing Grant Maintained schools back into democratic and accountable LEA control. Now they feebly follow Gove's disasterous policies (which were largely spearheaded by the discredited Chris Woodhead)

Today, Mr Gove's Ofsted side-kick said that the attainment of poorer children in inner city schools were improving, while the same at schools in coastal towns were doing less well. Perhaps Mr Wilshaw should consider that many coastal town have become the new inner cities, where long-term unembloyed have migrated to, in order to enjoy a pleasanter life. The side effects of this are considerable, but the aforementioned gentleman is not saying anything helpful or clever in revealing to the world exactly what schools in coastal towns have known for many years - just another soundbite that will impress his lord and master.
