So, having not visited the board for a few weeks and whilst not wishing to re-enter the fray, I do feel it would be uncharacteristic of me not to acknowledge this well-deserved rebuke. I really should know better. Actually, I do but after living in the United States for many years, I have become infected by a strange dichotomy of spelling and things sometimes slip through the net.

I have little regard for statistics, as such, and in respect of those advanced in the education debate, I think this is with good reason. Forget those trotted out by the protagonists - just peek into the product reviews on Google or Argos, slog through the prose of eBay offerings, subject yourself to one of those banal television quiz shows, or (horror!) read some of the contributions to The Telegraph to quickly understand that the current (and perhaps immediately preceding) generation in unacceptably large measure is illiterate, inumerate and inarticulate. Not every one of these is included in the one-in-three trinity of those born to foreign parents as recorded in today's paper.

I think it is this lamentable condition which has exercised Mr Gove and I consider he deserves much credit for perhaps risking his parliamentary career and tackling a problem of long standing; one ducked by succeeding ministers having responsibility for this area. He may not be going about it in the best or a popular fashion - it would seem that he isn't! - but his aims should be encouraged, not thwarted by those reluctant to be disturbed from their comfort zones or having agendas involving political or social engineering.

More stick to come, I suspect but hey! (as the young people say), what's a little devilry amongst chums?

So what you are saying (forgive me if i'm mistaken ?) Cornet
is that , you have no time for statistics or even educational research
preferring to base your information on received wisdom and the Argos catalogue :yikes:

There are always people who will stick up for the likes of Mugabe, Gaddaffi, Mussolini, Amin, Pinochet, Hans Anderson's Emperor and Stalin. But how anyone can see any virtue in Gove is quite beyond me.

I'm rather disappointedin the Labour Party's feeble stance with academies and free schools. They are now effectively condoning the policy.
In the past, Labour were consistent in bringing Grant Maintained schools back into democratic and accountable LEA control. Now they feebly follow Gove's disasterous policies (which were largely spearheaded by the discredited Chris Woodhead)

I quite agree with every point here, Alpie. In fact, I rather think you could have stopped after the ninth word.

Today, Mr Gove's Ofsted side-kick said that the attainment of poorer children in inner city schools were improving, while the same at schools in coastal towns were doing less well. Perhaps Mr Wilshaw should consider that many coastal town have become the new inner cities, where long-term unembloyed have migrated to, in order to enjoy a pleasanter life. The side effects of this are considerable, but the aforementioned gentleman is not saying anything helpful or clever in revealing to the world exactly what schools in coastal towns have known for many years - just another soundbite that will impress his lord and master.

What a nifty site EA - perhaps NUT should issue Govey with an annual assessment of his grip on statistics (and legitimate use thereof) with recommendations for further training where necessary

The latest curriculum changes, made by incompetent people, do not apply to "academies". Presumably this is ploy to persuade the schools that did not succumb to the empty bribe, to become academies
