From the HMRC website, information about humanity -
"Special rates have been introduced twice within the post-war years, causing income tax in certain circumstances to exceed 100%.
For 1947-48 a special contribution was payable when a person’s total income exceeded £2,000. For investment income over £5,000 it was 50%. So with income tax at 45% and surtax at 52.5%, the effective rate was 147.5%.
In 1967-68, the special charge was imposed. For investment income over £8,000, the rate was 45% which - with income tax at 41.25% and surtax at 50% - meant a total rate of 136.25%."
Easily collected but it upset the Beatles. Shame!
1980s. The US model. Reaganomics. An almost humane 50%.
Now - Robbers who think tax enforcement is bullying.
But that's all in the past and can never happen again as it's been exposed for what it was (not that this was so hard to do, of course).
If you have a terminally ill dog, don't just look after it in the home and give it food. That is the old way and it has been exposed for what it was. It can never happen again.
Instead, starve your pet unless it does a decent day's work. There are plenty of careers for terminally ill dogs if they are prepared to look for them.
Film work, supporting police drugs teams, greyhound racing, rounding up sheep. If those are unavailable, ask your excuse for a pet what else it could do in its final months.
Perhaps it could learn a new skill like electronics, look after the ill in the flourishing voluntary sector or even stack some shelves in a popular pet shop.
Could it fill in for a pit pony in its final 24 hours? Even those close to death can have a couple of uses.
Remember, do not feed your terminally ill dog until it finds work. This is the new way. The old way has been exposed for what it was. It can never happen again.
Repeat. It will never happen again. Happening again is completely forbidden. Our cameras will be watching.
Hi. You can call me Lord Freud, an Old Whitgiftian, and manager of welfare reform. Whatever you damn well like. I was never elected but, hey, I think I'm a pal of Dave's so what the heck. Some of these words - don't ask me which ones - were provided by "Liberals" to support "Conservatives". They're clowns and I endorse this message.

... or even self-select for sniffing out buried explosives in, eg, Afghanistan. After all, it's natural selection...

:ok:
you hadn't been listening to r4 pm with eddie mare had you lat! (or should i say 'lord freud')?
your 'advice' is just like the bilge the smug loonies that have been contacting the r4 'pm' programme, featuring an unemployed youngster who 'dares to admit to smoking'. people have really enjoyed hating him (& other jobless people) all week. eddie smuggly just lets it all go on, in the name of 'discussion' of jobless youth. imv it's absolutely disgraceful that r4, at times, mirrors the style of vile themes and untruths that the tabloids also pedal. 'acute smugness' doesn't begin to cover this particular radio broadcasting 'progression', especially in relation to recession, highest unemployment in decades, and public broadcasting objectives.

Evan Davies - yes, he who seems to find serious subjects utterably titterable - is far worse than the mare. Nearly strangled my radio this morning.
best thing i find is to ignore the BBC news agenda if possible.
The things that make the BBC news have been chosen or placed. Very frequently they run stories that the politicians, (usually government politicians) want them to feature. These stories are also often heavily influenced by the kind of information placed or emphasised government departments.
I am sure you can all find your own examples, but for instance stories on Greece tend to emphasise the money being used to" bail out" the greeks.......when there are lots of other angles.
stories on Uk pensions have very specific agendas(mainly the "need" to get retirement ages raised).
Stories about Iran emphasise their impending nuclear capability, rather than what the iranians perceive as threat from Israel.
anyway, point is, I try to look at the areas of news that interest me, and find the most independent sources available.
PS. Why do the BBC give us the footsie 100 price so often ? Unless you are in the business, its of no interest or use on a day today basis.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
here's a piece of news from 2010 that the government forgot to mention to their friends in the newsroom at the BBC. Probably just an oversight.........

It was included as a news item on Toady, TS. I don't remember it being discussed on the programme however, but I could well have drifted off, somewhere around the half hour sports announcements

but they didn't mention it in 2010 when it actually happened !! Only came to light as a result of a freedom of information request from the Grauniad. A pretty sorry story all round. Imagine how this story will play in, say, Tehran.
Sport on R4. Pointless. They only cover england (useless at everything) manure and chelski, and all their fans know the results anyway !!

A sorry story indeed. I was pretty boggled by the legal costs too. Would any of this have come initially from the Legal Aid budget? Which has now been slashed, of course
Thank goodness for the FOIAct and for investigative journalists :ok:
