I prefer to think that the country changed the country in 1979.

Yes. The rot had set in by the time Head Teeth became PM. Three day week, mismanagement of miners' strike, taking UK into Europe under some rather dodgy conditions were only three of his MFUs.

Given that the "implications" are state sanctioned mass murder to many of us (and not just the Quakers) this IS a very clear case of something with a 'right thing'.
It's most encouraging IMV that in Scotland people were prepared to support getting rid of it in spite of the economic consequences.
No - it's not state sanctioned mass murder until the buttons are pressed.

Re 1979 - yes things changed, but by no means everything was for the better. Some would say that there were improvements in some areas, but actually some of those might have happened anyway due to technological and other developments. I found the 1980s a really miserable period.

I wasn't suggesting there were changes for the better … Possibly there might have been some. Just a mo - I'll go away and have a think about that …
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

1979 was the first general election that I was old enough to vote in. Maggie was on the pulse beat. Prescription charges were raised from 20p to 40p, which made sense, but at the time I thought that scrapping the NEB was wrong.

That's a bit, er, straws in the wind. Nowadays, everywhere has a university. London, Durham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Leeds, Sheffield, St Andrews, Manchester, Liverpool - all mainly or significantly red.

Not sure there's much red in Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen or St Andrews any more!

I wasn't thinking, though yellow is redder than red, if you take my meaning.

Scottish river police have already intercepted 500 english migrants attempting to cross the tempestuous River Tweed, in overloaded and ramshackle craft.

Chief Inspector Mc Tartan informed this reporter "This is the beginning of a whole new humanitarian crisis for Scotland. Who will take care of these pieces of human flotsam? Who will pay for all the blankets and mars bars? Not us, Jimmy."

The UN are holding an emergency summit in Barbados to discuss how best to handle the immigration crisis.

Meanwhile those who survive the perilous crossing are being detained at a tent village just outside Kelso, while their applications for asylum are processed.

Yes, I saw that one earlier. I've been looking at properties (online) in Scotland this afternoon.

At what point did the SNP become 'redder than red'? In my memory they were considered to be rather on the right of the political spectrum. Or are they just to the right of the Conservatives?

The old Left:Right nonsense really doesn't apply anymore IMV

Well, perhaps someone who thinks it does might answer.

Nicola Sturgeon is ex-Labour, but the trend evolved over a period of 20 years or so.

Sad to see the scum from the anarchist-left can't accept the result of a democratic election. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2015-32678518 Perhaps we could give them a one-way ticket to ISIS ?
