i closed it because it had moved on to issues beyond my intent in starting the thread and which seemed to me to be at high risk of becoming a repetitive dead end on a topic that attracts highly unwelcome attention on the internet - i would not wish to be part of bringing about such attention to this forum
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Why not ask for it to be split?
(I think its a little amusing that you say this as a Jazzbo, Sax invented the Sax for Belgian Military bands, I wonder if he would have been unhappy about his instrument moving on to issues beyond it's intent ?) :JOKE:

I think you were right, and I apologise (again) for starting the diversion.
Is the fun over? Seriously, I back da Jazbo - those with longer memories will remember a certaiin notorious propagandist invading the BBC messageboard with inflammatory comments after a particular musical event ... I think there's less likelihood of that now because such 'trawlers' trawl the internet looking for suitable discussions where thay can intervene. For some reason, the forum doesn't seem to get spidered as it used to by the search engines - I've no idea why - so the risk is less.
However, the matter of 'reputation' does matter when certain journalists refer to Friends of Radio 3 as 'a less friendly bunch you will struggle to find this side of the Islamic State' :-) : this in fact was directed at the forum, not FoR3, but I don't much appreciate the mistake being perpetuated on the internet. :-)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Isn't there already a thread about mr Lebrecht ?

That could be libellous, MrGG - though come to think of it, perhaps we're the ones who should be suing him? (In fact I did write to him and explain that the Friends could not be judged by the likes of MrGongGong and Mr Beef Oven who are merely honoured guests of the forum ...)

Should I have included the word "allegedly" ?
I'm not sure that I am "honoured" but nice to be a guest.... :-)

I chose my words carefully ;-)

I think that I can undestand why this thread has been closed but regret it nonetheless. Offensive posts can always be removed by moderators should they occur, whether in this kind of thead or any other, but if the standard of discussion could remain on the level of that illustrated by Richard Barrett just before it was closed, I could see no obvious reason to close it; monitor it carefully, perhaps, but close it? Richard's observations would almost certainly be broadly echoed by Daniel Barenboim; would we really wish to exclude from here the kinds of thing that he might want to say about the matters concerned?
