Could you please explain this term and who it's supposed to refer to? I'm guessing it means something like "straw man".

Yes, it's a made-up word. But not by me, the Americans coined it (sushiology, I mean).

And when he discusses a thread-topic like BBC objectivity, does that have to become what he wants it to be, too?

So what about "faux-left" then, Humpty?

                  Don't call me Humpty, please.

You know what faux-left means. Why are you pretending?

And the topic is BBC bias, anyway.

Well one ex-member of the SWP understands the term only too well ...

...the left is, in the UK anyway, is a huge agglomeration of far-left idealists, social conscience lefties, mdiddle-of-the-road-moderates-who-aren't-LibDems, armchair leftists (the faux variety?), trades unionists, and [what could be referred to as] the working classes who read the Sun, many of whom are deeply conservative with a small 'c'.

I hate the expression 'the working classes' because (a) it somehow suggests working with ones hands/supplying physical labout is less worthy than turning up at the office, and (b) I work flippin' hard but somehow don't qualify.

Quite a few qualify as "people who consider themselves of the left, but whose views are either wholly irrelevant to the poorest indigenous sections of our society, or actively hostile towards them". That is only Ron Liddle's definition of the Faux-left, of course.

Whatever allegiances Rod Liddle may have had in the past, he is and has always been a thoroughly repulsive and untrustworthy individual on every level.

The only people he impresses are those who are delighted to discover that he would once have claimed to be of the left himself, and who think they can embarrass current lefties with the information.

This isn't about Ron Liddle, this is about the Faux-left. RB wanted to know what it meant (even though he knows!).

No, because he doesn't exist, and his opinions are therefore of even less consequence than those of his near-namesake.
