...the left is, in the UK anyway, is a huge agglomeration of far-left idealists, social conscience lefties, mdiddle-of-the-road-moderates-who-aren't-LibDems, armchair leftists (the faux variety?), trades unionists, and [what could be referred to as] the working classes who read the Sun, many of whom are deeply conservative with a small 'c'.
I hate the expression 'the working classes' because (a) it somehow suggests working with ones hands/supplying physical labout is less worthy than turning up at the office, and (b) I work flippin' hard but somehow don't qualify.
