If the motive is to protect the innocent it could even be described as a noble calling and one that most of us would be far too scared to undertake.

Anyway, I'm off now to my local Wetherspoons to meet an old friend who also happens to be an atheist and a former Young Socialist, though he has matured politically since then, I'm relieved to say ...

It isn't complicated, about that you are correct.
Killing People is wrong.
Start from there, stick with it, and its not a problem.

Oh , and since everything we experience is in our heads, imagining things better will most definitely have a positive and real effect.

Israel is a democracy where the people can peacefully demand change at elections.

I think it's more a theocracy, given the influence orthodox Judaism has over the government. And I also understand that it is very difficult to voice oposition to things like the illegal settlements, diversion of water from Palestinian land, the wall, etc etc. If you do the best you can expect is to be called a 'self-hating Jew'.
(Which rather parallels the position pacifists were in during WWI & WWII)
