You said "It takes greater intelligence and effort (and therefore discipline) to listen to classical music (though sadly less and less with R3) than any other genre." You didn't specify which continent it came from, so I assumed "any other" meant "any other". Yes, Scott Walker was indeed half of the Walker Brothers although his work of recent decades could hardly be described as "silly (...) pop songs". You see the reason why people might dismiss your opinions on matters like this is that your knowledge of them seems (as you admit in your last post) to be too limited to give your opinions much credibility. What you're saying is "my ignorance is as good as your knowledge", which is surely a ridiculous position to take.

Retired, perhaps, but certainly not retiring.

Intolerance combined with insufferable pomposity ... a potent mix indeed!

Sorry, Comrade Barrett, but I still think the Walker Bros songs were a bit silly in the 1960s, and that listening to classical music requires rather more intelligent thought and concentration than listening to 'rock'.

Does that now put me in line for a sort of socialist corrective purge ...? :-)

Nor did I say anything to contradict that. I'm guessing you haven't listened to SW's last two or three albums. "Intolerance": well, I have to say I really see no reason not to be a little impatient towards someone who constantly sounds off about things he appears to know very little about, and then, when faced with actual knowledge, replies feebly that he "only meant European music" or whatever. We all know a lot about some things, a little about other things, and nothing about still others, I think that's fair to say. Not all of us on the other hand seem to bear that in mind when posting our opinions...

However, it might have demonstrated a rather higher level of intelligence if you had simply said that you don't agree and explained your reasons 'why' .... ?

Or would that have taken an unacceptable degree of effort on your part?
Just a bit of banter, old boy...... that's what makes these boards fun, where appropriate. You always put people down with smart-arse replies; that ain't clever - anyone can do that. Even little old unintelligent me!

I cannot believe that it is he, of all people saying that.

A response is no doubt, pending.

She may have been related to the lady in the Osbert Lancaster cartoon frantically applauding topless from the stalls.

The caption was " Brahms always has this effect on Mildred! "

                  Aren't you curious?

OXOboy might be a bit of a buffoon but at least he has his ears open (though some of what happens in the bit between them is alarming )

He'll probably think it's Lady Gaga you're referring to.

I suspect Barry's Tea has been applying the Prof Says "Stockhausen Test"

(I discovered this week that the BBC Proms staff have a thing about this well known Irish beverage)

'I've never listened to any, but it's obviously crap
the things I like are obviously for those of superior intelligence and taste'

                      Try this one Barry

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

                        Here's an actual video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OA8HFUNfIk
It's only an excerpt but interesting to see the instruments and how they're played (always assuming a certain level of curiosity of course)
