So that'll be horse meat on the menus and creative accounting in the back-office function, will it Sir Gerry?

    Allegedly.
Not to mention ClubCard deals, coupons for buy-one-hospital-operation-get-one-free, 20p per litre off the drip and endless tashy ads that end "very little health"?...

    M. Leboeuf might, however, have a point - at least in in principle - in his suggestion that John Lewis PLC manage the NHS (better than G4S doing it, that's for sure!), but there'd almost certainly need to be immigration into UK on a scale of which I suspect he might well disapprove before the company could have a hope of finding and employing anything like enough staff to do that!

You should stay away from trashy newspapers like the Guardian and The Daily Mail.

I caught both stories on the BBC - immigrants have been a net cost of £150 Billion since 1995 and Libyan soldiers have sexually assaulted women in Cambridge and then claimed asylum. A much more balanced reporting of both events.

Analysis by the University College London Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration found that while the fiscal contribution by European workers was overwhelmingly positive – amounting to £20 billion in a decade – the same was not true for non-EEA arrivals.

Between 1995 and 2011, immigrants from outside the EU made a negative contribution of £118 billion over 17 years, the report found, using more publicly-funded services, including the NHS, education and benefits, than they paid in tax.

But native Britons also received more than they contributed in the same 17-year period – amounting to a cost of £591 billion as the national deficit grew - and European arrivals gave a £4.4 billion boost.
the NHS is very good value innit

and this thread did not start from the Graun but The Conversation

can we all not just bury old tribalisms and stereotypes? ... the point of the opening post was that the international data was instructive and non polemical ....

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

That's almost 20 years in my book. In any event, how much might it have cost UK instead to deal with and refuse all such applications (and I'm referring to gross costs here)? And what about the total amount money that emigrants from UK have cost all the countries to which they have emigrated? - or do you consider that one statistical rule for immigrants into UK and quite another for those who emigrate thereform is acceptable?

How did they "assort" them? Into height categories, age, hair colour, ethnicity, or what?

I think it was actually the Sun which ran a competition among its journalists, asking them to provide the World's most enticing headline, guaranteed to increase readership.

The winner was --- RANDY VICAR IN MERCY DASH TO PALACE!

                      Nothing much has changed !

                        Lol!

But it is a bit naughty, maybe we shouldn't do it anymore. Well, at least for a while.

My mother takes the Mail every day and has done for at least the whole of my life, so I do occasionally give it a once-over - my favourite headline was PAEDOPHILES TO GET VIAGRA ON THE NHS. I promise you that I did not make that up.

Er, no sir! Your post #48 has "assorted", as you will see from the quote from it in my post #50; it is noted that you yourself changed it at 15.13 and, despite your protestations in the "Last edited by Beef Oven!; Today at 15:13. Reason: I didn't edit anything. It's not true." there, you'd not otherwise have had such a reason and would therefore have edited nothing as indeed you claim to be the case. Never mind - it's not that important in itself; it merely provided some momentary amusement and for that I shall express due gratitude to you!
