I agree that he did appear to become more sympathetic later on.

The title had little to do with medicine!
He received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity certificate from some Protestant sect in the US.
For me, Ian Paisley's astonishing and apparently sudden conversion from ranting bigot to crucial N. Ireland peacemaker was right up there with the collapse of communism and the end of apartheid.
Ian Paisley R.I.P.

Richard Tarleton
He received his doctorate from the fundamentalist Bob Jones University in Greenville, S Carolina, in 1966.
Currently obits on PM, I won't even try, far too complicated but came good in the end. I remember seeing him in a city centre bookshop in Belfast around 1980 - I was looking at bird books, the big man entered with an equally big detective and they swept through to the religious books section at the back. In those days it was quite normal to find yourself on the plane between Belfast and London (Gate 47, Heathrow) with the likes of Ian Paisley and Gerry Fitt, polar opposites chatting amicably together....
An American I knew slightly was studying fundamentalist protestant sects in N Ireland and, in the spirit of research, attended (Paisley's) Martyr's Memorial Church a few times in the role of a worshipper. He was finally approached, on the way out one Sunday, and invited to give an address at a future service. This he did, remaining in character throughout. Scary.

Unsurprisingly, Paisley was the subject of many death threats and he was granted protection in the form of police units that would check out and monitor any hotel/B&B he was staying in on his speaking tours.
On several occasions the officers on watch outside his hotel would be alerted by the sound of sirens & lights coming on in the hotel in the early hours. To their relief and delight, it transpired that The Great Man was not as confident a speaker as he appeared and he would often get up, unable to sleep, to review the next day's speech. He took with him everywhere an electric toaster to make himself a snack in such circumstances and it would be the toaster that had set off the hotel's smoke alarm that cause all the kerfuffle.

In ranking order, Sodomites were probably way down the Rev Ian's list of sinners compared to Papists, that's for sure! In any case, he was entitled to his opinions like everyone else?
Sorry, I've never actually heard of someone called Anita Bryant, me, but I'll consult Wikipedia forthwith!
