It's always sad when people die
Maybe he would have contributed more to the peace of the world by being a violinist rather than a puppet soldier?

Sadly, he would have had no choice, since Israeli soldiers are all conscripts.

The loss of every life in this conflict is a personal, familial and societal tragedy. That there is a video memorial of one does not diminish the loss of each one of the others, including the many children who will not live to have a chance of realising their potential. I think Daniel Barenboim has put it eloquently in the link posted by jean above, and from which I quote:

"At the very heart of the much-needed rapprochement is the need for a mutual feeling of empathy, or compassion. In my opinion, compassion is not merely a sentiment that results from a psychological understanding of a person’s need, but it is a moral obligation. Only through trying to understand the other side’s plight can we take a step towards each other. As Schopenhauer put it: “Nothing will bring us back to the path of justice so readily as the mental picture of the trouble, grief and lamentation of the loser.” In this conflict, we are all losers. We can only overcome this sad state if we finally begin to accept the other side’s suffering and their rights. Only from this understanding can we attempt to build a future together."

Many brave people refuse to go along with this
            There IS a choice
(but his death is sad and avoidable)

At the very heart of the much-needed rapprochement is the need for a mutual feeling of empathy, or compassion.
If one thinks ones own experience is a singularity and nothing else can be compared to it (as SOME, NOT ALL, folks do) then the possibility of being able to empathise is reduced IMV

To whom were you referring here? I ask because the video concerned now reports as having been removed by the user...

It was the Israeil soldier who has recently been proclaimed as dead. It was sad to watch. He no more deserved to die than many of the Palestinians on the other side.

I don't think too many of our soldiers could play the violin like that. He also looked so young - really sad.

The Gaza conflict has raised the important question of empathy. Would that both sides were capable of greater empathy and, indeed, imagination.

Couldn't happen to two nicer Tories.

I'm delighted that someone has jumped out of line at last, though.

                            Very sad ...

Though I suspect Baroness Warsi was appointed by Dave chiefly to give his government team an 'inclusive' air in the run-up to the forthcoming General Election, the lovely and highly intelligent Baroness is clearly the moral superior of the ever-pragmatic Dave, and will be hugely missed by those 'of independent mind' as the incomparable bard once famously put it.

Will Dave now revert to "playing safe" by replacing the admirable lady with yet another quite astonishingly unattractive and ever-obedient male dullard ... ?

This wouldn't happen to be the same fiercely homophobic Baroness Warsi would it? How Dave could ever imagine her being involved in 'equalities' is beyond me. Her adherence to contemporary reactionary interpretations of the Q'ran in relation to LGBT members of her community and other British communities makes her quite unsuitable for this role.

But I'm thrilled that she's spoken up and acted on a matter of principle over Gaza. After all she's never managed to be elected as an MP and but her membership of the House of Lords means that she doesn't have to worry directly about electroral opinion any longer.

Poor Dave must be gutted, especially as Boris is making huge political capital out of his 'dear friend Sayeeda''s actions.

A very fair and balanced response indeed!
