    stunning speech about IDS
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

She struggled to get re-elected at the last election and is standing down in 2015 but by Jove she gave both barrels to IDS on this occasion.

Needless to say the S in IDS stands for solipsist these days & he appeared to be unimpressed.

Typical of his class, mind. I know it's supposed to be old-fashioned to say such things these days, but on Sunday evening I stood on a neat lawn full of such people in self-absorbed groups. It was supposed to be one of a whole number of open garden days, monies going to various charities, but nobody (except the children) was interested in the garden (award-winning top designer-built, not an millimetre of soil anywhere to be seen). I only went for the free Pimms and canapes and for "the experience" - and it felt like being on the set for a Poliakoff play.

Blimey S_A what a pill! I hope the Pimm's was plentiful & strong and that the canapés were delicious. Did you see Michael Gambon or Michael Kitchen in the distance?

Not ever the Lesser Titmarsh, Ams - but it was worth the experience, (where else are you likely to have one like it other than in either Dull Witch or Hemp Stead?) and cost just £20 to get pass the electronic gate to the marquee for the large fruit-filled free Pimms and three bouchees to follow, and £2 for a raffle ticket for the landscaper's coffee table top book, lavishly ilustrated from every inspirationally luxurous corner of the globe you might care to dream of.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the winner of the second prize - the magnum of Champers - was the house owner's 9-year old son, who just happened to be picking the tickets from the hat. Just one big fix, really, just like everything else.

              The Rich arrived in pairs
              And also in Rolls Royces:
              They talked of their affairs
              In loud and strident voices.

( The Husbands and the Wives
              Of this select society
              Lead independent lives
              Of infinite variety)

              The poor arrived in Fords,
              Whose features they resembled,
They laughed to see so many Lords
              And Ladies all assembled.

              The people in between
              Looked underdone and harassed,
And out of place and mean
              And horribly embarrassed

              For the hoary social curse
              Gets hoarier and hoarier,
And it stinks a trifle worse
              Than in
              The days of Queen Victoria
              when

They married and gave in marriage,
They danced at the County Ball,
And some of them kept a carriage.

AND THE FLOOD DESTROYED THEM ALL.
