Most useful - thanks for this, 8th: I'm listening to it as I write. Worthy of note also was the portrayal of women in Westerns, almost through to the final gasps of the genre: always immaculate coiffed in clean linens on arrival at the site of intended settlement. The puritan protective obverse.

What is it that is quoted as often said in America? "Behind every strong man is a strong woman" - whatever that is supposed to mean. Watching the faces at Trump rallies shows how this complied-with image lives on as a perennial for future generations to re-coup.

....unfortunate last compound word there Serial....

....possibly "Behind every strong man - is a long list of ignoring felonies, coups, corruption, mendacity, and the truth"

...the whole book is a very interesting listen (once you get past the slightly annoying voice of narrator - he is however clear/audible....)....

On the theme of a strong woman behind a strong man, Friday's (8 Nov) Woman's Hour might be of interest, a discussion about Susie Wiles , President-elect Trump's chief of staff, said to be the first woman to hold the post.

Unfortunately the main conrtributor had an irritating voice (to my ears), laughing while speaking and sounding slightly drunk. I know Radio 4 was criticised for too much formality but this seems over-compensation to me. After all, Susie Wiles is not some frothy new show-biz air-head. What she does in the next few years could be a very serious matter.
