Who said anything about getting rid of the state? Every one of my comments is predicated with the notion of a state that intervenes in important, necessary or vital aspects of life. What I'm against, is a nanny state that does everything for us, and is involved demonstrably, in most aspects of a citizen's life,

So what you object to is something that doesn't happen
Do you (and do your fellow kippers) also object to the amount of state surveillance that we have ?

What I 'object' to, is situations like the one that you describe regarding your son; like the elderly couple that I and others had to intervene in the care of last week. 80 year old sole carer for her 78 year old husband. Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, can't move double incontinent etc. She has heart failure. Gets bad chest pains early in the morning and is rushed to hospital. Discharged late evening and obviously can't look after her husband. We get him into a home two streets away. They want £650 for 3 days/2 nights and the ambulance service want £235 to take him there. Working class people on very modest pensions. Clegg and co need to focus resources on these situations and let people pay for their kids' school dinners.

Can you turn it in with all the kipper stuff, please?

Why did the ambulance service plan to charge? Don't tell me you used a private ambulance!

And MrGG, if you say we can do both, fine. Let's just get things done in the right order.

I cannot speak for him over that but, if no NHS ambulance was available and willing to do the necessary within a reasonable timescale, what alternative would there have been but to engage the services of a private ambulance? Or perhaps the NHS ambulance services sought to charge that amount - who knows? The fact that they're not usually supposed to do that even to people with insurance might not necessarily mean that some unscrupulous and/or heavily pressurised ambulance team might not contemplate charging in the hope of hoping to get away with it; whilst that would, I hope, be exceptional, I would not discount it entirely as a possibility in certain strained circumstances...

Agreed. It's as silly and irritating as 'lefties' and too vague to have any immediate relevance.

However, that sounds like a very expensive care home. Is there no council social service in your area? Along with education, social services take up the largest part of your council tax. Was the hospital a private hospital which can't call on NHS ambulance services? I'm not sure why an 'ambulance wouldn't be available', since discharging anyone from hospital isn't an emergency.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Care home was £950 per week and they pro-ratad it to £650! We ended up getting it paid for under the 'respite' for sole-carers facility. But I think that if we hadn't argued, it wouldn't have happened like that. I didn't call the London Ambulance Service, my friend did, but she was told that a fee is applicable to take someone from their home to a care home. She argued and refused to pay and insisted that an ambulance was sent. The ambulance arrived and they took the man to the home.

                    All's well that ends well.

I wonder what would have happened if the poor people in question did not have assertive people like us standing by.

Anyway, today will see my last post on the P&CA threads. I joined the forum more than two years ago to talk about music but I have indulged myself in the 'wrong' subjects and discussions, and disappointed myself somewhat!! From now on I'll only be found on music related threads and frivolous matters!

                    Thanks for all the fish!

                                And there's more

Surely writing a lie on a poster (75% of UK laws are MADE in Brussels) is likely to end you up in court ?

(A House of Commons Library study showed this to be wrong: “6.8% of primary legislation (Statutes) and 14.1% of secondary legislation” implements EU regulation.)

I guess if Boots are allowed to sell sugar pills in bottles with a label that has a name of something that isn't in the bottle then anything is possible.

My tap water sold as whisky business is going to make me rich I tell ye
