    Moss?

Not sure if we have a specific gardening section.

Ah well - here goes. Is it too late in the year now to tackle moss in lawns. I've already tried moss killer - a month or more back,
and now got a scarifier, which seems to churn up an enormous amount. As the weather is worsening, and it's getting more and more damp, I'm wondering now if war on moss should now be deferred to early spring.

Too late for much detail, but after relaying the front lawn twice.... I gave up when it was overtaken by the green tide once again...it looks nice, well some of the time.... becomes a vast sponge after rain... it has infiltrated around the back now... very good for cleaning muddy wellies on...

So I learned to live with it....I leave scarifying to the large raking feet of Pheasants, Magpies etc...they're rather good at it... Squirrels bury nuts in it, then dig them up again.... wild moss lawn, wildlife....

What is required is a dry spell, with temperatures not dipping below say 6 degrees C, was the advice given to me. Two or three years back, I dunked the lawn with moss-killer in early February, and the lawn being badly infested, turned black! I was able to rake up a wheelie bin full of the stuff. Moss has been under control since then.

I'm not sure what is going to happen this winter, as I let the grass grow, following the long dry summer, which was damaging the grass. But now the grass has been too wet to mow, so I can't see any moss beneath. But I'm hopeful infestation will not be too bad, as I have very severely pruned some trees and bushes which were creating damp shady areas, which moss loves.

Indeed - (and Mr GG ) - diversity essential for wildlife. Look closely at our lawn and grass is in a minority. Just mow it regularly.

The operative words are "a bit of". Here there are great swathes of moss. Grass is hard to find in some places.

To vespare - lawns do go black after putting on the treatments - but the green colour returns, either with or without the moss. Getting wheelie bins full is to be expected with vigorous treatment. I got one whole bag full yesterday with just 15 minutes effort, and there's a long way to go.

I'll go with the diversity and small patches.

Are there any creatures which really "like" moss - for the diversity aspects?

Quite a few chaps quite fancy Kate and quite a few older ones probably quite admired Stirling.

And some people even read a bit of Mosse.

OTOH, here's an article about moss - whether it reproduces sexually or otherwise (it does ... work that out ...), and whether it can be of any use (to us?) - http://bryophytes.science.oregonstate.edu/page3.htm

I'd be inclined to leave it as nothing much will take it's place during the cold months and it looks b***y awful if scratched out or killed. Go after it next Spring - if you must.

                          Hmm... who does that, exactly...?
                          Wind? Temperature?
                          The resident Feral Pigeons...?
You don't go up there yourself do you..? Careful with that...

When Stirling Moss had his near-fatal crash in 1962, I wrote to him and got a lovely, green-embossed letter back from his secretary... I lost it somewhere in the various moves, rewirings etc...

                            Mick Jagger never does this.

"Moss" for me is forever associated with Elton John , Your Song, and the pop culture of the 70's and 80's : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlPlfCy1urI

In my innocence, I assumed every one else would have the same reaction.
