You can no longer add an extra carriage, as such things no longer exist. You would have to add an extra set, probably of three coaches, always assuming you have one lying around, which you probably won't.
Talking of two together, next Monday and Tuesday I am going to avail myself of Scotrail's offer to the older amongst us of "travel anywhere in Scotland for £19 return". With my Senior Railcard, it will actually be £17, and I'm going to Mallaig via Glasgow and Fort William, a seven hour journey from here. A trip on one of the world's most scenic railways (the West Highland line), a pint or two and a freshly caught haddock or some prawns, a night's b and b, and the return trip the next day.
I think there are worse ways to spend one's birthday!

You're quite right, Frances. These days are long gone, and the observation car now runs only on the Royal Scotsman. Though of course the Black Fives still feature on the Jacobite during the summer.
