    two together railcard

I wonder if any forum members will be able to take advantage of the new two-together railcard - or are we all on senior railcards already ?

A new national railcard allowing two people travelling together to save a third on train fares has gone on sale - the first to be launched in 30 years.

Well quite, and another distortion in the already insane ticketing regime.

Living within the Network Railcard area, I (and people travelling with me) can use my Network Railcard for certain journeys. It is very random though, I can go to worcester via london, but not from Salisbury to Bath.

It really is high time that sensible ticketing was introduced, but I'm not holding my breath.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

Slightly odd. I wonder if someone could have more than one of these? For some trips the cost of the card has a low break even point, so cards with different pairings could stll be worthwile.

It's better value than a Senior Railcard, if two people are travelling.

Good point, but the choice might be tricky. Up-front costs would be lower, but there is a three-year reduction for the Senior Card which does not seem to be the case with Two Together. Also, you would obviously lose out with Two Together every time you were travelling without your partner.

You don't actyually have to be a couple in the conventional sense to get one of these. But how many people make all, or even a majority, of their journeys with the same other person?

It is a complete failure to understand that railcards should aim to encourage anyone to travel more by train - for that to be achieved, they should not be restricted (as they are not in Germany) to any particular group of people.

And in Germany you can get group reductions on the day without buying a card in advance.

Is it desirable that more people travel by train? In absolute terms perhaps not, but if it shifts traffic from the roads that's probably a good thing. Rail travel continues to be problematc in the UK. I was surprised that.a 3 carriage train I recently travelled on from Edinburgh to Dundee was full to bursting, and that is often the case on some other lines. If rail travel is to be encouraged the operators could at least try to match the demand.

Down here will it be marketed as the two-together rail replacement buscard?

How difficult can it be to monitor 'live' how many tickets you've sold and then to add a carriage at short notice if required, provided that this does not exceed platform lengths en route?

Or has the concept of 'service' in 'rail service' been permanently degraded?

Swedish railways have been known to put on extra trains at very short notice. However, it's probably not easy to do, and in a busy system could be very hard.

we use two Senior Railcards [eg one each]but remain mystified by which trains we may not catch on the return journey ...... and the metaphysics of whether we are a 'couple' or not would be most troublesome ... on our trip to London last week we agreed [an event to remark upon] that we were now in that phase of life we had witnessed in our elders when young; where everything is either surprisingly much more expensive than it ever used to be, and/or very confusing [if not inoperable or ungraspable]

even though leaving the house is quite literally terrifying [especially for swmbo when i drive]; staying in has a daily terror all of its own ... white envelopes keep arriving demanding multiples of weekly income with menaces; and the HMRC seems to have been inexplicably careless in its calculations in previous years and implacably demands another £359-65p it forgot to ask for five years ago ... after a seeming fifteen years paying for telephone calls to automated services a young lady finally tells you to surrender it is hopeless trying to rework the calculations - they are correct and the rules are against you ....

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Surely it can't be "degraded" per se if it wsn't there in the first place?!

You can no longer add an extra carriage, as such things no longer exist. You would have to add an extra set, probably of three coaches, always assuming you have one lying around, which you probably won't.

Talking of two together, next Monday and Tuesday I am going to avail myself of Scotrail's offer to the older amongst us of "travel anywhere in Scotland for £19 return". With my Senior Railcard, it will actually be £17, and I'm going to Mallaig via Glasgow and Fort William, a seven hour journey from here. A trip on one of the world's most scenic railways (the West Highland line), a pint or two and a freshly caught haddock or some prawns, a night's b and b, and the return trip the next day.

I think there are worse ways to spend one's birthday!
