Dogs on beaches - one of those binary issues (like smoking in public places, inter-movement applause ) that divide utterly. I spent my career looking after chunks of the UK coast including some of its most famous beaches (inc. several on this thread), and can assure you that probably the biggest single item in the postbag of everyone like me during the summer is dogs on beaches. For every responsible dog-owner like you there are tens, dozens, who let their dogs race about the beach, fight with other dogs, bark noisily, defecate uncollected in the sand for other people's children to step in, scrounge food, shake themselves dry or spray sand over everyone in their vicinity, and generally spoil everyone's day but theirs and their owners'. So dog-free beaches, or beach zoning (the case on several in this thread) is sensible and reasonable.

And car park charges (not just by councils, but by NGOs who care for our coast who do not receive council tax) go towards things like beach cleaning, maintaining infrastructure, wages etc. A free-for-all with no charges would very soon result in a very degraded coastline.

Arguably, more people of wealth had a charitable outlook until the 1960s. That sort anyway.

On your last post, what a fantastic area to work in, whatever the problems.

I don't mind reasonable parking charges, but when they start getting closer to London rates, and no facilities provided, it does not make sense. I would rather that they all put 10 pence on a pint, a sandwhich or a couple of quid extra on B & B charge, for example, than having to pay £5-10 a day extra to park. Often you stay somewhere for a couple of hours and pay £3 and then the next place the same. So you might have to spend £9 some days just for the privilige of a visit to three places. And towns like Mousehole are real dumps which should advise people not to visit before they are ripped off with parking charges.

I agree about the bad dog owners. Those with badly behaved dogs and who do not clean up should be fined £100 each time. But I do not see (even in London) that many - maybe one in ten.

If they don't want summer visitors then they should say so, and we will save our money and go elswhere. These issues may well put me off another visit to Cornwall.

Yes but - the £10 on the B&B would not find its way to the beach managers, likewise the 10p on the pint. There isn't a single rural fund. For many of Cornshire's beaches you could join the NT and end up saving money across a holiday. Fining dog owners - this is....fine, but unless you're a council dog warden with powers, it can be difficult identifying the miscreants if they don't choose to cooperate - it's tricky, I tell you.....

I believe you. Anyway, i will probably sell the car if I can persuade you know who, as I hate the damned thing. I would rather go by train and use taxis or busses. So we may choose closer to home than Cornwall for holidays, even if we miss the scenery.

Unless you've got really good bus operators near you, Ari, I'd advise you to stick with the car. My biggest single expenditure is my car, and did look into getting rid of it - I consulted my brother-in-law who had got rid of his as soon as he retired: he said the first five years or so were OK - but the bus service was gradually cut down year-by-year until it ceased completely. He ended up buying a car last year.

We only use the car for trips and holidays. I wouldn't use it normally in stink hole London. But the trip back from Cornwall took approximately 5 hours driving until we hit the road coming up to Hanger Lane in London. The next 12 or so miles took nearly 3 hours.

Cars, like violas, are only good for making a bonfire with ...

Having a few days away near cardigan bay again.
This is part of Aberporth beach today, in beautiful autumn weather.

here's another lovely quiet (ish) British beach. Usually.
                    Llangrannog.

only once a year they build a bonfire on the beach, loose off a load of fireworks, and let the tide put the bonfire out.

                    Fantastic .

I'm not sure I have been to Mwnt, and I think this is the northern part of Aberporth, but I shall investigate. Might need to book a few days there to help check.
