Walking down Regent Street recently, I was rather surprised to discover a plaque - green I think - marking the site of the former Argyll Rooms, where (it said) Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was first performed in London.

There is a large map on the wall of the Liszt house in Weimar showing the towns and cities he played on his many tours. I've seen a copy of the same map reproduced in Alan Walker's biographies of Liszt. I noticed that in my neck of the woods, the North of England, Liszt played in Preston, Huddersfield, Doncaster, Wakefield, Rochdale and Doncaster. I wonder if there are any plaques there?

Apparently there's one on the front of the Royal Clarence Hotel in Exeter (unveiled in 2013)
And the Manor Hotel in Exmouth.

The sad thing about this edition of Pointless was that "Sibelius" would have been a pointless answer had any of the contestants tried to answer the question - not one of the 100 people on the pre-conducted survey were able to recognise Sibelius from a photograph. Or should I not be surprised?

There isn't sufficient wallspace in Huddersfield for all the foreign composers who have stayed and played in the town!

He played in Liverpool too, where there is a (fairly recent) plaque - see my post above.

                    Hiya Jean,

Yes, of course he did. Thanks for that info. I made my list from memory and did not recall Liverpool. My point really was mentioning smaller places where he appeared rather than today's big cities.

Maybe we could test out Radio 3 presenters too. Or two teams against each other: Radio3 verses Classic FM.

There's a nice blue plaque for Bartók on the house in South Kensington (Sydney Place) where Bartók stayed when he visited London.

I think that may be a pointless exercise!

Pleasant to happen on these by chance, as we did with the above when went for a walk on Beacon Hill, near Newbury, and decided to visit the nearby church in Ashmansworth. His house is right next to the church.

Absolutely beautiful spot, isn't it? Whenever I'm that way I like to make a little detour. The road from Ashmansworth to Faccombe has to be one of the most idyllic in that area; a real sense that one has somehow gone back in time.
