    York Station

What on earth are they doing to it?

I do hope that they haven't altered the main part of it - both historical and filmic!

It was bad enough when York University expanded onto the green belt!

What have they done to it?

Apart from the annoying muzak emitting from the speakers above the Virgin Trains cabin (next to W H Smith) it all seems fine.

      Thanks Eine.

Unusually I am rushing about a bit but I thought I had read somewhere that there was a new space age design.

It is quite possible that I imagined it or it was in a dream.

      I hope so!

        No, you weren't dreaming, Lat.
I posted this on ts's new Train Chat thread:

A UNION claims the ticket office at York railway station will be shut down and replaced with an entirely self-service area.

          It isn't exactly a space-age design!

At a tangent: I remember Judi Dench telling a story about arriving at York station and with taxis in short supply due to a heavy rainstorm sharing one with Archbishop ... the bishop and the actress.

I have many fond memories of York Station in days of steam and what seemed like an infinite variety of locomotive types.

And yet on the other hand I remember a roadside sign saying "Welcome to Yorkshire - slow children crossing"!

I spent a year in York in the 70s and remember sometimes going to the station in the evening to post a letter directly onto a mail train, knowing it would be delivered in London the next day.

When I was a civil servant at the inland revenue, (I know, I know) there used to be an ideas competition, where there were cash prizes for money saving ideas. the odd £25 or £50 prize was the norm.
The biggest prize I recall being awarded was £1400 ( this was the mid 80's) for a clerical assistant at the Shipley collection office, who suggested that a CA should get a late afternoon train to London to bank cheques, rather than posting them, so that an extra days interest was earned overnight.
I guess were were looking at cheques for really huge sums.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

The simple solution is to take it back into public ownership
before it was given away to spivs WE were making a huge profit from the East Coast Mainline

Ah, so was that "good" profit then ?

( I agree with you about public ownership ).

                              .

... if WE (the public / the taxpayer) were making a Huge Profit from the East Coast Mainline, presumably this was at the expense of the paying travellers, who we might say were being overcharged?
