The pictures don't do it justice.

Summer flowers fading but still a deep yellow and mauve.

Mostly, though, it is in the landscaping.

This is St Mary's Church, Iffley, just by the Thames in Oxford, a very handsome church I think, and one that has a distinctive architectural warmth. The romanesque carvings really add to the atmosphere. In the 13th century it also played host to anchoress, Annora.

I was here again today and it was like paradise.

Good to find paradise where one can, Lat. I find landscaping can be really hypnotic. A thread like this can be an oasis of sorts.

So it was. My apologies. I cannot recall whose idea it was that we should visit it. I remember getting lost and visiting Capel by happy accident, and the narrowness of the roads, and the speed of the traffic.

This post is a cheat really in that Arne is a part of Dorset I haven't visited and it's an excuse for a bit of broadcasting watch. That is, full marks to Brett Westwood and Laurence Whitaker for "Autumnwatch - In a Nutshell" - people on the television refreshingly not trying to be television people and consequently being perfect for television. The last episode is still on BBC RB 1 with a woman presenter at bat caves. She's also pleasant. Coincidentally, the series is not without controversy for the unfair ditching of Martin Hughes-Games.
