    North Norfolk

... next week the vinteuils are off to, to them, unknown territory - north Norfolk.

A week, with Houghton Hall as our base.

Any recommendations - walks, churches, gardens, beaches, pubs, restaurants, towns etc to visit or avoid.

The weather forecast is for grey skies, northerly winds off the North Sea. Appropriately Sebaldian, I think

I believe its a good area for birdwatching, especially along the coast, so take the binoculars. There's also a Muckleburgh Collection marked on my road atlas near Sheringham, but it doesnt say what it is a collection of. I dont know the area, though I used to spend holidays on the Broads. By the way, local pronunciation is a trap for the unwary: Happisburgh is pronounced Hazebruh.

          And Cley rhymes with fly.
Best to avoid Cromer (though the church is fine) and Sheringham unless supplies are needed (in my opinion).
          Holt is charming.
Loads of fine churches to admire and visit if that's of interest; Salthouse's position is a splendid one, for example.
Good fish and chips to be had too.
          Muckleburgh is a military museum.

          Enjoy!

PS: Felbrigg and Blickling, if you're NT members (and even if you aren't), are well worth visiting too.

I haven't been to Norfolk for a while, since my son sold his house there. I loved the place for its wildness and mystery.

There are boat trips from Morston Quay to see the seals and seabirds. The Berkeley family (Lennox, Michael etc) used to have a house in Morston - may still have for all I know. It was/is called Coldblow, which I can assure you is appropriate.

Too many interesting little mediaeval churches to mention. (There's a Norfolk Churches website for further details.)

Holkham beach, just a bit off the beaten track.

We used to like the Dabbling Duck gastropub in the pretty village of Great Massingham.

You can visit the scene of Caliban's Caffeinacious Epiphany, as recounted here and depicted here

"...the isle is full of noises,

We had a great holiday 20 years ago with kids, based in Wells-Next-The-Sea. I second the seals at Blakeney. They take you out there on a boat. Cley has an interesting church, once by the sea now stranded inland. Holkham Hall and beach are terrific, also Felbrigg Hall (NT). The parish church at Binham is in a beautiful setting in fields surrounded by the fairly substantial ruins of the 11th century priory. Good local ale - Woodforde's Whery.

When my family moved to Norwich in 1953 (I was 8 years old) we were told to beware of the 'cold winds from Russia which have nothing to stop them'.

Seriously tho', a day (or more) in Norwich is a must. Be sure to visit the cathedral and the mediaeval area. They used to say that Norwich had a church for every Sunday of the year and a pub for every day.

Be aware also of the HALLOWED TURF which is CARROW ROAD.

                          Sandringham is a must.
The Colmans Mustard Museum in Norwich is worth a visit too.

Oh I'd love to open a Book on the chances of vinmousseux actually visiting the messuage and curtilages of Château Delia!

                            (I'm sure it's wonderful, mind!)

                            Yes indeed...

... and one thing I've always wanted to (and shall) do is visit the key locations from one of my favourite films of all time, Losey's version of L.P. Hartley's The Go-Between, all around Norwich, as very helpfully set out and depicted here:

With the Michel Legrand score firmly on repeat-play on the car sound-system
