Very sorry to hear this, Bryn. Your matter of fact approach to it seems a pretty healthy one, I hope it pays rich rewards. Best of luck!

Not for the same reason but my other half had his hip ‘done’ a few years ago and is now on the waiting list for the other hip. Before his first operation, we had rails fitted along the stairs and the step, provided with a rubber shower mat, and a toilet seat to raise it to the right height, with a frame to help him stand up. All free by NHS. Mind you, the toilet seat wasn’t quite so convenient for me as I was quite a bit shorter than the patient They also offered to raise the armchair he usually sat but that wasn’t necessary as, with an additional cushion, the chair was high enough for him to be able to sit without bending his hip more than 90 degrees.

I don’t know if your case needs all these or you are entitled to the helps, but it will be worth looking into it

All pretty much standard, especially in the early stages of recovery and adaptation. I was caring for my mother at the time she went downstairs in the middle of the night without putting the light on. She misjudged the last riser and fell, braking her left hip. I know just how important had work on the physio is, and not just for the bones and muscles. She used excuse after excuse ti avoid what was essential for the recovery of the whole metabolism. Six months later she had a 'mild' heart attack. I do not intend to follow her example.

I hope Bryn's case may be more straightforward. My other half had hers 'done' five years ago. (Op on Friday afternoon, home, walking slowly without a stick, Monday lunchtime.)

She never even thinks of the subject now, and has needed no household mods.

Best wishes, Bryn, for a speedy recovery.

The sudden and presumably unexpected nature of Bryn's case is interesting - and I'm very glad that prompt and appropriate action seems to have been taken.

Where joint replacement is scheduled in advance it appears to be wisest to check what kind of joint is appropriate. There are experts who know about this kind of thing - not necessarily surgeons - though they work closely with surgeons - and by working closely with the consultants it's possible to get better results. For example, I think Andy Castle might have had a different joint fitted than an 80 year old. My point is that it can pay off to get the best joint for the patient's circumstances and intended lifestyle.

Also, check the hospital. Around us there is one hospital which is very good for this kind of thing, and another which isn't. On the other hand, the one which is good for bones etc. is not so good for some other conditions, and the other hospital would (apparently) be preferable. I hope to avoid both for as long as possible!

Any update? I do hope the medics are satisfied with progress?

My progress seems fine. The only problem has been the fact that the physios do not carry out routine work at weekends, so getting started on walking will have to wait until tomorrow. I have, however, been out of bed, fully weight-bearing on the left leg, then into a chair. I suggested a walk, with frame, to the loo (taking all responsibility for risk), but it was no go. From what I experienced in the few moments on my feet, I foresee no problems quickly getting on to crutches, then a stick or two, then free walking. I expect to be out of here in couple of days or so.

Oh, this ward has poor Radio 3,FM reception, so most listening is to what happened to be on their micro-SDHC card in my smart phone.

Sounds like it's all going well, but if you don't mind me saying, be patient. Don't try to run before you can walk (figuratively speaking).

                    What's on the SD card?

Don't worry, I have been checking out the NHS advice on hip replacement recovery and grasp the need for both caution and perseverance.

As to the SDHC card, (JS) Bach's cello suites, several Hear and Now prorogrammes, Beethoven violin concerto (Pat Kop), Christian Wolff piano music, etc.

                        Any HIPP performances?

The Bach, as mentioned elsewhere, is Kujiken's on a violoncello da spalla. I appear to have accidentally wiped the Badiarov set from the directory. Then there's The Biber Mystery Sonatas (Sepec et al).

Just stumbled (oops!) on this thread myself, so belated good wishes from me too.
I thought it would be something to do with an army regiment parade.....

Great that your making progress Bryn, but as someone said earlier be patient! I broke my right leg, back in 1992, so I know!

Do you mean that the hospital has its own micro-SDHC cards, or is that a small typo? I hope you're not getting too bored with the whole thing. If you're only going to be there a day or two more then hopefully you'll be able to get back to a more normal diet of music etc. soon. Otherwise we should perhaps try to find a way to smuggle some decent music in for you.

Do any of the streaming services work in there? Wi-Fi is perhaps a no go area.

                                Best wishes again.
