Highland Black - a blended whisky from Aldi supermarket costing £12.99. Doesn't sound at all promising - but, encouraged by fellow quaffers Cali and BeefO [slainte, gentlemen], I gave it a go. It's very pleasant (I've paid double that sum for much inferior types of single malts) - much better, IMO, than Dave's "OK" assessment. A very pleasant "regular" dram, saving the Lagavulin, Oban, Penderyn, etc for special occasions. (There was also a "limited edition" HB "Sherry Cask" single malt last Christmas at £18, which was also excellent value for money. Sometimes you get a little more than what you pay for.)

Corrected earlier msg re wrong store - yes Aldi. I do think it's value for money, so not bad, but I just prefer some others - which admittedly are more expensive. I'll watch out for the limited edition/premium versions.

In Lidl, I noticed a 22 year old and 25 year old blended whisky. Unusually for me, I didn’t make a grab. I went home and had a little look on the net to find out more. I saw that there’s a 34 year old as well.

So, it turns out the 22 year old came out the winner in the World Whisky Awards, beating of much more expensive blends, including Johnny Walker’s renowned Blue Label at 4/5 times the price. The 22 yr old is £29.99 and the 25 year old is only an extra £5. The 34 year old is £49.99.

Anyway, I decided to go for the 22 year old, as it’s the one with the prize! Not tasted it, I’m off booze until March (an occasional a 12 month hair-shirt I give myself). I think it was distilled in 1993 and bottled in 2015. Anyone had a drop?

I do. Done a few bottles of Red Breast down the years. But Scotch is the real deal. It’s a bit like Brahms/Bruckner - I don’t mind Brahms at all, no problem.

Brave words! (You're talkin' to an Irishman ) I'm not familiar with Red Breast, but the odd tincture of standard Jameson's is hard to beat imo. Bushmills or (worse) Black Bush is very highly thought of round these parts, though I for one find it most unpalatable. Harsh and boke-inducing.
