Many thanks, my local Morrisons is due for a very detailed investigation!

Och aye, slaint je va or something like that, that Laphroaig is wonderful stuff. I'd re-run 'Whisky Galore', which is one of the funniest films on the planet, but I MUST go and have some sleep.

Of the big grocery chains only ASDA an Waitrose have the Quarter Cask Laphroaig on their websites.

I've only had the one bottle of Old Pulteney 12 year old, but from memory, I would not hesitate to buy it again if I saw a good deal.

My son and I had a good foregathering here this summer (he works in New Zealand) which involved a tasting of Islay malts. We both very much liked the Bowmore 15 year old---dark and sweet and utterly gorgeous.

It's worth keeping an eye on the Amazon "Lightening" Deals as there are usually one or two malts on offer on any particular day at discounts between 30% and 35% on the rrp (if that is already quoted in the normal Amazon listing) or the normal Amazon price (if no rrp is quoted).

The deals are staggered throughout the day and only last for a limited time. There is limited stock allocated to the deals and Amazon Prime members have access to the deals 30 minutes before other people. This is important because deals on the most attractive malts are usually sold out within 10 minutes, well within that first 30 minutes.

You do need willpower not to click the button on any old whisky just because is appears to be a good deal - a dull whisky is still a dull whisky whatever the price. It is best to be be very selective and only buy whiskies that you really want, pass over the rest and be prepared to wait to see what turns up in the future. You also need to be a little cautious of some of the glowing reviews and it is worth bearing in mind that the Amazon deal prices can sometimes be matched by some of the supermarkets.

Even without the deals, some (but by no means all) of the normal prices on Amazon also represent very good value, e.g. the highly regarded Talisker 10 yr old at £27.

The upcoming deals for the next 24 hours are shown on the website. As an example, these are what I can see at the moment, but others will be added as time goes on:

                      Aberlour 12 - Starts today 5:57pm: probably around £23
Talisker Storm - Starts Fri 7:57am: probably around £28 (personally I would go for the regular Talisker 10 yr @ £27)
Ballentines 17 - Starts Fri 7:57am: probably around £36 (a well regarded premium blend)
                      Glenlivet 18 - Starts Fri 9:57am: probably around £43

All, at the very least, decent whiskies.

The start times are those for Prime members - others will have access 30 minutes later (in the unlikely event of there being any discounted stock left).

The deal prices are only stated once the deal starts, but I have given a rough guide, based on a 33% discount.

Out of interest I tracked the deals I mentioned in my previous post - these were the actual deal prices:

                        Aberlour 12 - £21.19
                        Talisker Storm - £22.99
                        Ballentines 17 - £36.99
                        Glenlivet 18 - £39.99

All were remarkable bargains IMO. (I was very tempted by the Aberlour and the Glenlivet but managed to restrain myself, having already bought Aberlour A'bunadh and Strathisla 12.)

Amazon Lightening Deals coming up today:

Lagavulin 16 Yr: 3.57pm for Prime (a terrific but powerful Islay malt) - est £36
                          Glenfarclas 15 Yr: 3.57pm for Prime - est £32
                          Bunnahabhain 25 Yr: 5:27pm for Prime - est £147
Aberlour: 16 Yr: 5:27pm (2015 Whisky Bible: "A malt of unbridled magnificence") - est £31
Compass Box Peat Monster Blended Malt: 5:57pm - est £28
                          Oban 14 Yr: 6:27pm - est £30
Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie: 6:27pm - est £28

(The times are for Prime members, the prices are guestimates.)

                          I really wish I hadn't looked.

I would love to get any one of the Lagavulin, Glenfarclas, Aberlour and Bennahabhain - or better still all of them.

Time to ban myself from Amazon and tear up my credit card before I am tempted.

If anyone is interested in getting any of these you stand little chance if you aren't a Prime member and even then some are likely to be sold out within five minutes and most within 10 minutes.

I'm going to limit myself to one bottle over Xmas - at that price, it could be Highland Park!

Why? At that price you may as well get two!
