... after a good deal of experimentation, I've found a (very) small amount of the right kind of - carbonated - water produces the optimum effect in terms of releasing the nose and the taste of the whisky..

Hmm.... "Kon-whisky" indeed. That might explain some of the highs - and lows - in his recorded legacy. The very fine Berlin "Die Fliegende Holländer" with D F-D et al fuelled by Johnny Walker or Dewar's whereas a rather lumpen Bruckner 4th with the Czech Philharmonic might have been recorded the morning after. He died quite young (he was 61) so I guess that his fondness for a wee tipple might have had something to do with that relatively early demise.

Some of K's work is/was really good, but I believe it was variable as you and others have suggested.

Another gentleman who performed in the northern parts of these isles was, I believe, on occasions not to be found on or near the podium at the start of concerts. My friend who lived nearby, and went to a lot of concerts, mentioned that it was not unheard of for one or two members of the brass section to disappear, and escort the conductor on to the platform after extricating him from a nearby pub.

Despite these events, many of the performances were still very good indeed.

Yesterday, I discovered three bottles of malt that I had totally forgotten about - they must have lain tucked away for 30 years or so: Glenmorangie 10yr (still unopened), Clynelish 12 yr (1/4 full), and Highland Park 8 yr (1/4 full). I'm looking forward to sampling them.

I'm back on the Teacher's. It's my go-to whisky - I have no class.

Now - this came as a surprise to me, but there is a very pleasant single malt called Glen Marnoch (I was going to do a joke about the bassist in the Sex Pistols, but apparently everybody does that!) at under £20 for 70cl (at that price, I thought, if nothing else it can brighten up a porridge) ...

"Glen Marnoch" isn't actually a distillery but simply Aldi's single malt whisky brand name. What's in the bottle will certainly be single malt but may have come from whichever deal the über-canny Aldi has done with whoever. If I could only bring myself to go into an Aldi, I would buy a bottle to see what it was like as a dram (or three). Aldi experienced once - I vowed never again: too much like Kwik-Save for me (although the not quite so off-putting Lidl sells a favourite white wine - Roero Arneis - at a great price for a very good bottle). My go-to supermarket whisky has been Co-op 12 year old (Dalmore) but I'm not sure that you can still buy it.

It's in their current catalogue, and is piled floor to ceiling in my local branch.

They have a single malt for £50 too.

Correct! I'm just apprehensive that the product in question might be in stock to satisfy the decadent lotus-eaters of the south coast, whereas north of the Trent there may be considerably less call for it.
