In the last few weeks it's been JWBL, JW Explorers Edition/spice Road and VAT 69

Really must get you on to single malts. I've got some JW highish grade stuff in my cupboard, but doesn't reslly compare with some of the malts. Re "drinkies" I drove through Tomintoul not too long ago. Amazing views nearby though cooler than Turkey. Tomintoul distillery does some quite good stuff. I didn't take any photos, though.

I've got about 30 bottles of single malt at home, but I'm on a blend mission, at the moment!

Tomintoul keeps coming up amongst those in the know. I've never tasted it (nor can I pronounce it!).

Had a birthday with a nought on the end recently: work colleagues decided to help me out of my misery with a bottle of Glenfiddich 15-yr old in a red tin. Slips down nicely at weekends with or without MotD A more interesting taste than the standard green-label product IIRthatC.

Those in the know, cite the 15 year old as the best available Glenfiddich, better than the signature 12 year old and the more expensive 18 year old.

I've never had it, but I've recently had a few drams out of a bottle of 12 year old that my daughter brought back from the duty free. Very nice. But, it's 43%, not the normal 40%. I wonder if it makes a difference. I can't make the comparison, because I can't remember in detail what the 40% Glenfiddich tastes like.

Anyway, enjoy your wonderful bottle of 15 year old - Sláinte!!!

Must be the taste buds - chacun ...

I recently sampled some 15 year old Bowmore, and also some Aberlour. For me the Bowmore was too polished, too refined - does that make sense? It had some similarities with good brandy - a sense of smoothness. Easy to drink, but there's the rub. The Aberlour tasted a bit feeble, though it did have a taste.

I don't think it's possible to recommend a "best" whisky, as too much is going to depend on the preferences of the drinker. Right now I seem to prefer single malts, such as Laphroaig and Lagavulin, which have a special distinctiveness, though not all single malts stand out. I feel that if I want to drink something more bland I might just as well go for a blended whisky.

I might try to revisit Talisker, which used to be a favourite.

... don't know much about whisky - tend just to have a medicinal bottle in reserve for when I'm feeling poorly - but we found in a cupboard during a recent move a bottle of 12 year old Knockando. Is it likely to be any good?

Yes I think it will be. I've visited the distillery, and oddly enough had a free sample from the visit namely a miniature bottle of the 12 year old Knocking around until one cold, dark night last winter when its contents mysteriously disappeared ... down my throat. I think the visit was in the mid-90s.
