Sainsbury's ends fake half-price wine offers

We all like a deal, a bargain, a top offer, but Sainsbury's ends its fake 'half price' wine offers, for now

    Will other supermarkets follow suit?

And how will we spot bargain offers in future?

Waitrose is offering Nyetimber English Sparkling Wine (made by méthode champenoise from English-grown chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, the champagne grapes) that usually retails at around £30 (£26 at Wine Society) for £22 until 02 January 2014. Not cheap admittedly but definitely a bargain. Friends are taking advantage of this offer to take some bottles of Nyetimber over to Provence this Christmas to tease their French neighbours

£22 per bottle???!!! I used to like wine; thank goodness, then, that my drugs regime doesn't seem to agree with drinking alchohol!

English sparkling wine-makers have decided to jump aboard the exclusive wine market that the French created for champagne, rather than than deal in the £6.99-£14.00 price range favoured by Spain, Italy, New Zealand, Australia, USA etc.

They should succeed. President Chirac was, famously, fooled by a bottle of Breaky Bottom. He was reported to be considerably annoyed when he found out.
That occasion, together with his celebrated sneer about British Cuisine, was taken as a sign by Parisian chattering classes (who regularly travel to London for le weekend) that perhaps M. le President was a little out of touch with modern life.

I do not necessarily blame him for that, I am out of touch myself, but I do not guide a nation's destiny.
