    Mince pies etc....

With the annual festive season coming upon us, me and the wife always sample various brands of mince pies. We have tried co-op's sort of ok; Sainsbury's taste the difference, better but the best is, imo, is either the Waitrose all butter ones or the M & S ones. This afternoon we tried the Waitrose all buttered ones, and a mug of coffee(I had some whisky in!! :))

For the coffee with a tot of whisky?
Actually, I don't like mince pies or Christmas pudding, so they are a no-no for me. Christmas cake, on the other hand, with a thick covering of marzipan (chip the icing off) is wonderful.

Gives us a call DracoM!! :)

        Tesco's aren't too bad either(their Finest range).

        What about homemade? Anyone?

They said on the Today programme that mince pies were less popular with the young, and that new flavours involving chocolate, rhubarb etc. were available

I'm an addict, I generally go cold turkey around January 6.

Tesco's Finest not bad. Most of the supermarket ones quite similar.

Edit - BBM only just noticed you also endorse Tesco Finest

I don't study the supermarket shelves if I can help it, but I was wondering whether mince pies are still seasonal items - or whether they have become all-year options, like hot cross buns.

Exactly. What did I find, last week, but cinammon and raisin hot cross buns, it's a wonder I did not find a rosemary and sea salt foccacia one!

I thought I was the only person in the entire world who didn't like mince pies. Always feel a bit of a Scrooge when they appear in the office and I refuse to partake.

Tesco's finest? Waitrose buttered? M&S? Rhubarb flavoured?

                    No! No! No!

Bbm, you had the answer - it's Homemade!

                    Now, take my wife........

                      That's quite an offer!

                      ...

Tesco Finest or M&S or Waitrose are the fallback, but the family home-made recipe, made by various rellies, is delicious - extremely short pastry, and a dollop of brandy butter placed under the lid before being warmed for serving

                      I'm an addict too

PS A good slice of Cheshire or Lancashire cheese avec is not a bad plan, advocated by Yorkshire relations...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Don't hold back on the fat calories, will you Caliban

I like a warm mince pie taken with a glass of ice-cold milk - a strange synergy that makes my fillings hum
