UK Coffeehouses and Tea Rooms: Your Recommendations

Getting a decent cup of coffee or tea o'the hoof is surprisingly difficult, unless you know the right address.

I was in Cambridge recently (what a beautiful city that is!) and a friend took myself and Mrs. T to Hot Numbers. We placed our order, took our seats, and five minutes later, the coffee was brought over. It was an epiphanic moment. For the same price as one of those miserable chain store coffees, here was a gustatory revelation: complexity of aroma and taste. I didn't want the cup to end.

Since then, I have been hunting out decent coffeehouses and tea rooms.

Here's an excellent address in London just off Trafalgar Square and round the corner from the National Portrait Gallery: Notes. For £2.65 (the equivalent price, or perhaps less, of the Neros and other chains dotted roundabout), you can have a deeply satisfying cup of coffee. Cakes and patisserie are excellent, too.

The Bottega dei Sapori affords an authentic Italian experience in Alton. Towers above the competition.

And, mmm, look at those semifreddi.

Hmmm...I'd be a bit wary of them. They don't seem to know what an espresso macchiato is.

Is the Monmouth Coffee House still there?

Caliban has a private one somewhere on the norfolk coast.

Not been the same since Travellers Fare closed down.
