    A bit of a poser, this one. You can get good fish dishes on Bedford Place and I rarely venture farther to eat out, but our chippy is useless - I know, because I used to work there two days a week.

    Last week I enjoyed battered calamari opposite the Cenotaph at Blue Island.

      the Calamari sounds good.
      Try the Millbrook road one....if you are passing.........was still great couple of years ago, and used to do good pea fritters.

              To get back on topic. I haven't tried it but Nigella Lawson uses smooth peanut butter in place of tahini plus a dollop of Greek yoghurt. There are of course variations on *humous like broad bean and pea, roasted red pepper, etc., although I've never made them I have bought the small (expensive) pots in supermarkets.

                  Don't like Nigella's idea - might taste OK but it's not humous - Chickpeas, preferably own-soaked and cooked but a can if in a hurry, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, tahini, ground cumin, paprika, celery seeds and black pepper. Optional chilli powder, salt if your tastebuds require - personally I don't think it requires it.

                    Indeed, it is about humus. Not the NW3 Frankenstein-types, but chick peas, tahini, olive oil and garlic. It saddens me what happens when the chattering classes get their mits on something like this

                        If needed, but in many north African recipes they do without it. Even in parts of Turkey they don't use lemon. I make mine with lemon

                          Edit: We need to remember that humus is originally a 'cucina povera' item, not a meze dish, or a European tid-bit.

                            Indeed, and it is as a cucina povera dish that I consumed it for a considerable period of my life, along with lentil curry and smoked mackerel risotto.

                              Scary! Me too. In fact, I cannot go near mackerel and rice any more. I'll never forget how on the second day the mackerel totally takes over the rice!! (rest easy Bryn, that's probably all we have in common ).

                                "Humus" is a type of compost (not to be confused with "a type of 'compote'").

                                Not to be confused with "hummus", "houmous", "humous", "hommos", "humos", "hummos" or "hummous", which are the various English spellings of the Arabic حمّص بطحينة which means "chickpeas with tahini".

                                "Humus" is often confused with the chickpea puree, as anyone who has tried Aldi's "Everyday Value" humous will concur.
