Was there any context that might make the suggestion less startling? A mis-translation, perhaps? Or was the pan made in a country where birds might habitually be kept in the kitchen?


Actually it might be quite useful to keep a canary in the kitchen, as an early warning of gas leaks.

Gas is no longer poisonous, so a canary would not be of assistance in that regard.

Before this gets completely out of hand, the explanation for what to me a was a rather strange instruction is as follows:

Fair enough mangerton, I forgive you for implied sexism. You were merely thinking of the health of the budgies and hamsters kept by pensioners, who could be possibly poisoned as their elderly owners cooked Thai curries in their woks. Good for you!

If the fumes are dangerous for small animals, they could be dangerous for small children? So a canary could be useful ...

I second Anna's encomium of Le Creuset. A hefty investment in both the senses mentioned by the Welsh domestic goddess () but a very worthwhile one.

As for non-stick pans, another pricey one-time investment for both saucepans and frying pans is Lagostina. Foie gras poêlé just isn't the same without one.

Yes I love the big red oval Le Creuset cocotte for stews etc... and a shallow one for lasagne or Dauphinoise potatoes...

And for omelettes and steaks, small and large Mauviel copper jobs



They just about break your wrist but wow they deliver the heat!

And there was I hoping for advice for the non-stick frying pan I need to buy!

I've been wondering about getting a SKK Titanium Plus (non-stick, can use metal implements, can be used with higher temperatures and Delia seems to think they are the bees knees). A bit pricey though.

Everybody round here waits for the "Sale Days" at the Le Creuset warehouse/offices in Andover.
Fabulous bargains apparently, but also dangerously near to a stampede, for the uninitiated, I am told. Worse than the shirt racks at M and S on boxing day.

Check out the brand "Green Pan" in the kitchen stores - they are ceramic with no black non-stick surface, but cook without any sticking and wash up beautifully. You can even fry an egg in one without using any fat or oil. I gave my Mum one of their frying pans last year and she is thrilled with it.
