Of course. We all believe you. I'm sorry you were put off, especially when I don't even have the UD of slang..... and you appear to be very well versed in it, if I may be so bold.

Talking of hot cross buns, there's always this, and it's less brutal than boiling water:

    A rabbit raced a tortoise,
    You know the tortoise won,
And Mr Rabbit came in late,
    A little hot cross bun!

Oh goodness, I've come over all faint. You'll have to excuse me for a while.

This is probably true, although some of the Heathen Scots amongst us will be having only a two day weekend. I do hope you all enjoy your prolonged break.

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Er, thanks for the Martinu advice chaps.
I'll give it a bash, copy and paste.

Look at any beginner instrumental tutor and you are likely to find the tune Hot Cross Buns, albeit the wrong time with only 3 notes. It's surprising how many children have never heard the traditional street-cry version with its octave drops.

My buns are rising - they might just be ready in time for coffee.

                      Risen, baked & tested.

I'll have to do some research on why we have spicy yeast buns on Good Friday.

We've just sampled, and I have to say that from the fruit content angle plus spice they are fine, but the texture is more cake like than bread like in spite of the very good rise I achieved. Perfectly pleasant, but not quite what was expected. Fun to try, though.

As for the origins, could it be that supplies of flour and spices saved for the winter were used up before the end of Lent? What was left in the store cupboard may have been for a final fling before Easter and the prospect of fresh sources of meat and vegetables.

The concept of rising (yeast) plus a cross adds up to a pretty Eastery theme...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

We had hot chocolate and splendid, toasted hot cross buns in Mannion's tea rooms in York this morning.

When we'd finished my other half said to the owner/chef, "nice buns". He blushed...
