    Marathon (when it was called that, but Wispa instead nowadays)

      Kit-Kat, surely one of the most longlasting snack products? Always a favourite: as a child I used to nibble away the skirting around each finger, saving up the real pleasure.

      Anyone remember that old Larry cartoon, possibly from Private Eye, showing a couple in bed, he handing her an open box of "After Sex Mints"?

        Looking at the big pic (#21) it's fascinating what's survived and what hasn't.... KitKats have survived virtually unchanged, including the branding - ditto Rolos, Milky Way and one or two others... But most bit the dust. Some (Bar Six) you can see why - others...

        Actually, I don't remember Aztecs at all - I see they were around 67 - 78... with a brief comeback in 2000.

        I hadn't realised Wispa was killed in 2003 after 20 years - but brought back in 2008 after an internet campaign, supposedly on a temporary basis... but sold so well that Cadbury's kept it in their range.

                Can most of what Cadbury's sells actually be called chocolate? The British seem to accept flaccid, non-snapping, vegetable fat-laced, cloying brown matter that has, what, 40% cocoa solids at best? I know it's milk chocolate but it really is dire stuff.

                The 'continentals' really do know how to do chocolate. Paris has some exquisite chocolatiers , though Chapon is by far the best I've encountered. This bar of this Venezuelan chocolate is simply divine: "Goût de fruits des bois, fruits rouges. Parfums de feuilles mortes. Tourbe". Says all you need to know about the depth of flavour possible in a bar of chocolate, even if "the perfume of dead leaves" is not your thing . And it's got that snap (the chefs know what they're talking about). Makes a perfect accompaniment to a good red wine or a single malt. If you're in Paris, you can buy it from the Grand-Epicerie near Sevres-Babylon Metro station (IIRC).

                Another, perhaps more easily available knock-out chocolate producer is Valrhona: try their 'grand cru' 64% Manjari: http://en.valrhona.com/nos-chocolats...%2070G&search=

                Not a huge fan of the Belgian stuff, though.

                As for Nestlé, even more beurk than Cadbury's, though of course I scoffed plenty of Wispas, Spiras and Kit Kats back in the day ('Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means, Cadbury's held me green and dying...')

                      Marketing surely isn't it? Plus what's pushed on the shelves, or appears more available.

                      It's rather like "Everyone says the tabloids aren't real newspapers, yet the Sun sells more than any other paper".

                      Whenever I give people plain chocolate, they tell me they prefer it...

                          Nonetheless, I think it's fine in the same way as fish and chips and pork pies are fine - and have sometimes enjoyed 'gourmet' chocolate far less. And I've always preferred milk to plain chocolate - esp that ultra-bitter 70%+ stuff...

                            Say what you like about Cadbury's milk chocolate, but I love it. One Christmas, I was given 3 of those 1 Kg. bars and scoffed the first one at one sitting. (Before you ask, I'm relatively slim.)
