Chalk'n'cheese hostleries I recently discovered in Hertfordshire.

1. The Lower Red Lion on Fishpool Street, St. Albans. http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs...Lion/St_Albans

A real ale boozer. I strolled in around 5pm, to find a game of Monoply o'the go, an elderly lady spilling the rest of her gin on the ancient incarnadine carpet, and a toasty welcome c/o the fire. Unable to decide between the 6 cask ales on offer, I was offered a small sample of the one I was interested in (Hooky, not to be confused with Old Hooky, a sensational pint from Hook Norton).

The pub dates back to the 17th Century, as does the decor. Rough'n'ready charm, you can expect seats covered in crimson faux-velvet with a sizeable gash in it. Cosy, snug, you're left alone to read, write, muse, as you wish, over a very decent pint.

2. A modern gastropub in Harpenden, Herts. serving up excellent fare: http://www.thefoxharpenden.co.uk/ Be warned: it seems to be permanently rammed, mostly with well-heeled 'City' types, but I snagged a comfortable table in the bar and "played a very bold knife and fork."

- scallops, pea purée, fried pancetta
- belly pork, sublime crackling, jus, some sort of exotic mash (Mnemosyne forbids recollection)

The above has instantly become one of my favourite pubs. Delicious and good value Thai food for lunch, and a lovely complex of snugs and a larger, skylit dining room in the wonderful conservation area tucked away just [west] EAST! of Waterloo, on a street of authentic early 19thC terraced houses http://www.mylera.org/Local_History.html

And best of all: Old Hooky ale (among 8 ales on offer), one of my very favourites since the early 80s (when I had a personal link with the Hook Norton brewery). So two delicious pints were consumed, nutty, hoppy, beautifully kept

Calum - re #69 :- I'm genuinely confused. For me Middle Kingdom is China and I would recommend (horror of horrors) a Japanese restaurant in Beijing called Haru.

yes Tevot it is confusing; i occasionally give my abode as the middle kingdom to HMRC etc ....; but in fact it is in the midlle of England and has been several sorts of realm at various times in the last 5000 years ... i call it so to remind the present lot that all monarchies are ephemeral .....

if you are ever in this area that pub is excellent for ale and nosh .... local meat, hand made bread that sort of approach

Down mynneck of the woods, there is in my village, two pubs that are not too bad at all. www.thewheatseaf.com this pubb does very good traditional pub food. I had a rather nice rack of ribs!) and The Ship Inn. Both have very good ales and the former, certainly has regular guest ales as well. About half a dozen.

Also, in another village called alciston, nestling at the4 bottom of The Southdowns, is another pub called www.therosecottage.co.uk. Very good this pub!! :) And good food as well.
