What a great thread Cali! Now thios has my brain cells whirling. Top of the list is a one called 'The Rose Cottage', in a villoage called Alciston, down a land call;ed bop Beep lane!! :) Next is the pub opposite Harveys Brewry Lewes Sussex. There are others...watchy this space!!

Harveys of Lewes, imo, is the premier brewrey in East Sussex.

BBM - a few years ago I worked in Lewes, and I concur about Harveys. I still judge all other English beers against it (to be consumed only when Belgian beer en pression is unavailable, of course). I had a fondness for their "Old" Ale. By "the pub opposite" I assume you mean the John Harvey Tavern, and fortunately I have an appointment to return there for lunch at the end of this month. I recall another pub nearby which had just about enough room for four people to stand. I didn't know about Alciston - I'll try to adjust my itinerary to fit it in, although I'm not sure I ever quite knew where Alciston was - East Sussex is a very secretive county.

Is anyone else an aficionado of The Good Pub Guide? I buy it (meanly) every other year, and keep the retired edition in the car. Always good for a main entry recommendation, plus lots of readers' tips for others which may not have been validated by the editors.

Avoid the 2012 edition, which was rearranged in a half-arsed way, with main sections in regional areas, but the 'Worth a Visit' sections still in counties, so it ended up the worst of both worlds, and a nightmare to home in on an area of interest. The current 2013 edition has been restored to normality, by county throughout.


Here are three of my favourites, in alphabetical order:

I have recently discovered The Dover Castle on Weymouth Mews (sort of Marylebone-y). Sam Smith's and not too busy. Does me for a pint on a Friday afternoon before home time.

Back in the days when I went to concerts and the like I had a season ticket for the Chandos on St Martin's Lane or the Lemon Tree on Bedfordbury.

Near the Barbican I quite liked the Sutton Arms as well.

When I worked in Westminster, I often used to visit the Marquis of Granby in Dean Ryle St. It had a good selection of guest ales, and the food was good. You had to choose the time carefully, because it got quite packed.

Ah thank you for that name reminder!! There is another pub in Brighton, which I think, was where the orignal place where The Dark Star Brewery started, I think called, "The Evening Star". As you come out of Brighton Statio0n, take the road(a one way coming towards you), go down there and it's on the left. Very good drinking pub!

Useful tip. Seems to hidden away and not too far from Wigmore Hall.

I took Frau A form a surprise birthday meal at The Black Swan, Oldstead, near Helmsley. Winner of several best pub awards, I can confirm that these are well deserved.

I'm fond of the 'Kebab And Calculator' in Balls Pond Road, Hackney.

Does a good draft Skol (available in cans too) and marvelous Roast Ox vegetarian crisps.

Although it's against the law, smoking is still allowed.

Many excellent places mentioned already! But a bit of a London weighting which I'll try to compensate for.

Current favourite is the Sparrow Bar in Bradford - a bier cafe in the city centre which is just what we needed to complement the Edwardian Beehive and ever popular Fighting Cock.

Whitelocks in Leeds is a classic mirrored pub and the Victoria & Commercial in behind the town hall is a gin palace par excellence (though the beer is sometimes better in Veritas - part of the small Market Town Taverns chain all of which are excellent and a safe bet for good beer and food in Yorkshire)

The Guildford in Edinburgh is always a must visit when across the border as is Kay's Bar and the wonderful Bow Bar. I long to return to the Olde Green Tree and Star in Bath and hope the Bell will survive the change of ownership and remain one of the country's best pubs for live music. There are too many in York to mention but perhaps a special exception for the Blue Bell which is as close to a perfect pub as you can get - if you can get in. Across in Manchester the Knott Bar is a modern classic and the 3 Pigeons in Halifax and Works in Sowerby Bridge are pretty special too. I could go on..........

Ah yes, you have mentioned this place before, IIRC.I hope they are still re running the olympics on the big screens.I would have thought it could be improved if JDW's bought it though.

One of the most "welcome" pubs is the Lion Inn, on Blakey Ridge, in the middle of the North York Moors. There's nothing else for miles and and happens to be on the Coast to Coast walk.
