Owing to a slight derailment of the 'Papal' thread for which I was at least partly reponsible , it occurred to me that it might be fun to post details of favourite Inns... I'm thinking pubs and inns, rather than out-and-out restaurants (though there could be a separate thread for that).

I'll move the odd papal irrelevance over here

One of my favourite refuges (scene of my 40th b'day soirée, in fact) is the alarmingly-named Nobody Inn near Exeter.

The malt whisky list is thick as a telephone directory.

When I am in the Smoke , I tend to enjoy a quiet pint at the George in Borough High St.
Proof that there are indeed pockets of civilisation left.
A nice hour here before seeing the mighty Saints put some London outfit to the sword does very nicely.

Yes .... On a winter's day if it's quiet in the office and I've got no lunch plans, I've been known to slip over the river after the 1-2pm rush and take luncheon there in the snug for an hour with a pint and a volume of Dickens!

it is though, the pub of choice for quite a lot of footy fans, so Saturday lunchtime not always the quietest..they tend to stay downstairs though.
Food is very decent at a sensible price too.

Yes, a nice pub. I suppose the fact that it's owned by the National Trust helps to keep it civilized. And just over the road from the delights of Borough Market.

The Amazon and Tiger near Holly Hill, Harvel, in Kent. No links, may not still be there, but part of my youth.

The Shaftesbury, The Sussex, all the pubs around Soho and my working life. For the company, not necessarily the drinks, though they were usually good enough.

A bit out of the way for most of you, perhaps, but Simon may know the Hurt Arms in Ambergate in Derbyshire http://www.thehurtarms.info/.

I went there with a couple of friends just before Christmas. Anyone feel like doing a Michael Portillo type train trip will find it on the Derby-Matlock line.
