There's excellent asparagus grown near Glamis, which of course is close to Dundee. There's an approx six week window, but the quality is so much better than imported asp. I was not aware of the Peruvian water problem until I read Anna's post. This part of Scotland is also famous for soft fruit, and again although imported is now available virtually all year, I buy only the local produce in season. As ah points out above, the poly tunnels have extended the season considerably.

Popped my findus lasagne into the microwave and three minutes later it still wasn't finished.
I thought "I've backed you before".

My Doctor says I should watch what I eat, so I've just booked tickets for the Grand National.

Recent comments from and about the fate of horses and horse-drawn transport in Romania have reminded me of a Romanian saying that the econometrist Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen (author of The Entropy Law and the Economic Process) liked to quote, "Horses eat people". Work it out for yourselves.

I was in M&S the other day, and watched a lady who was trying to decide whether to buy some steak. Without thinking, I said " Give it a slap and see whether it goes over the Jumps ! " She burst out laughing and told me that her Irish husband was a race horse trainer !

Here's a good recipe. I particularly like the laconic comment

Good to read that their horse meat has "an excellent track record", sustainably too.

Lordy, looks like Tesco are branching out and sticking their neck out on this latest acquisition

Or is it just a tall story?

                          Tesco buys Giraffe restaurants

Supermarket group Tesco buys the restaurant chain Giraffe for £48.6m as it moves into the family dining sector.

I don't understand why Tesco doesn't just change the wording on the packaging of its processed meat meals to 'may contain horse' - since few people actually look at the other + considerably more noxious ingredients therein listed it should avoid many problems in the future + allow the horse abbatoirs to be fully checked as they can now legally sell into the food chain which it appears they have been supplying for several years.

that kind of thing sticks in the throat.

Frances: it's (supposed to be) a basic principle of food ingredient listing that you say what actually is in the product. The 'may contain' option arises for allergens such as peanuts where, even in a product not meant to contain them, a warning is put on if there's the slightest chance of contamination because even the smallest trace can kill. As witness the girl who died after a kiss from her boyfriend who'd just eaten a peanut sandwich

Mind you, I quite like your idea. But how long before we'd see cheap fish products marked 'May contain caviar'??
